[TOPIC]ISSUE 216 Most important discoveries or creations are accidental: it is usually while seeking the answer to one question that we come across the answer to another.WORDS 441 TIME 2-24 TIME 45:00

The assertion reveals the fact the many influential discoveries and inventions sometimes are by scientific accidents. I agree with this point, nevertheless, the real reason behind the fact is the scrutiny and pursuit that contribute to these discoveries and creations.

Admittedly, a lot of discoveries in physics, chemistry, geology and so forth are made by serendipity. For instance, in medicine, Fleming accidentally found the penicillin; in cosmology, the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation, which proved the "hot big bang" theory was made in the scientific accident as well. Therefore, during many experiments and researches, it's invariably for observers to find something that might remind them to another problem, because in the certain field, many theories and phenomenon are related.

Meanwhile, the accidental creations are also easily invented. For example, the invention of the famous toy "silly putty", which was invented in the way to find something substitute for rubber.  The convenient stationary “post-it note was also invented by a researcher who originally decided to design a strong adhesive note but instead developed the weak repositionable note. From these examples, it is obvious that creations are not determined to make, conversely, sometimes, they come into being naturally when one is looking for something else. Hence, the fact that discoveries and creations are made by accidents are true.

However, there are basic reasons behind the fact. Great discoveries are made serendipitously since the careful scrutiny and abundant knowledge. Without this critical study attitude, even significant statistic or meaningful information was there,  observers would not be able to recognize it, let alone making striking discoveries. Moreover, unless the observers have sufficient knowledge to realize this new information is related to another problem, can they make a discovery by chance. So, behind the ostensibly fact, the truth is the scrutiny and knowledge that help to make discoveries by accidents.

By same token, influential creations are invented serendipitously since the strong pursuit and accumulated experience. Inventors sometimes fail to achieve the intended goals, however, with strong pursuit, they might find another innovative device. And having accumulated experience, when meeting with difficulties, inventors might realize this obstacle could be solved in another way thus find another thing. It is inventors' pursuit and experience, together with their inspiration and knowledge, that help them to create an unexpected thing in the way of solving an unrelated problem.

In sum, we can not deny that serendipities lie in discoveries and creations. Nevertheless, the fundamental reasons behind the fortunate are apparent, one is scrutiny and knowledge for discoveries, and the other one is the pursuit and experience for creations. They are necessary for coming cross answers for another question while seeking answers for a problem.
