TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
WORDS: 533 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-3-18
Nowadays, the issue whether the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries becomes more and more controversial. Since different world view lead to different conclusions, some people maintain that the beginner tend to discover something new, while some hold that the expert is more likely to discover. In my opinion, I think that the beginner is more likely to invent, but the creativity of the expert should not be overlooked.
Firstly, the beginner is full of curiosity and vigor. They tend to discover something unusual in their work. For example, a student like me, majoring in chemistry, will be curious with everything on the first day when I enter the lab. I want to know how various devices work and the characteristics of myriad of chemical compositions. Under the instruction of my tutor, I found the special characteristic of a certain composition one day, which can be used in drug delivery system. Without the eagerness to know something, without the curiosity about everything, I don't think I can have such a discovery. Although the instruction from my tutor should be counted for, I would not succeed if I have no curiosity in searching for something new.
Furthermore, the beginner is highly motivated and enthusiastic people who want to chase their dreams in the new profession. Since the beginners have never achieved any goal in their professions, they tend to be aggressive in their future work. It is said that ambition is the most powerful energy in the world. I agree with this saying very much. In the twentieth of last century, Hitler, the leader of Nazism, refused the soldiers who were not aggressive to go to the war field, because he considered that it would be difficult to win the war if the soldiers were not aggressive. One of his sayings known to all is that a soldier who is not ambitious can not be a good soldier. Likewise, the ambition is important to the beginners to chase their dreams in this competitive society.
However, the creativity of the expert can not be neglected, while accentuating the beginner's. Although the experts will be more likely to engage in the old concept, they have creativity as well. Due to the valuable experiences, the experts know the principle of how things work. Facing with problems, they will understand which will be the best solution. There is a famous saying in China, "Mature ginger will be spicier than the young one." This indicates that we should not neglect the power of the “mature ginger”. Looking at all of the Nobel Prize winners, a majority of them are experts in their professions. Without the creativity of them, how can this society be much more prosperous than before? Consequently, we should not overlook the creativity of the expert.
In summary, the complexity of this issue, requiring objective analysis, can not be well addressed in several hundreds of words. Accordingly, I accept that my view is merely one of the aspects relevant to the issue. Nevertheless, what I am sure is that the reasons mentioned above are enough to explicate my viewpoint that both the beginner and the expert will play important role in discovery. |
