题目：ARGUMENT 38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises tosignificantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A studyreports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high,people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatmentof colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can preventcolds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absencesfrom school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, anutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to preventcolds and lower absenteeism."

The conclusion reached in this argument is that to reduce theabsneteeism in schools and workplace in West Meria, daily use ofIchthaid, a nutritional supplement derive from fish oil, isrecommanded. To support this conclusion, the arguer cites a surveywhich is held in the nearby Eas Meria as evidence. The result of thesurvey shows with high fish consumption, people there visit the doctorless, compared to people in West Meria. This argument is filled withflaws and not well reasoned.

In the first place, the reasoning that eating fish can prevent colds isopen to doubt. the arguer only presents that people in East Meria,where a high fish consumption occurs, visit the doctor less than peoplein West Meria do. However, it can just happens to be that people inEast Meria like to have fish while people in West Meria do not. And,there might be other reasons that leads to higher rate of catching coldin West Meria. For example, it is possible that people in West Meriaare more busy(1) than people in East Meria do, and they endure morepressure at work or at school, which might be a reason of catching coldoften.

In the second place, the arguer commit a false analogy(2) in assuming thatto have more fish(3), people in West Meria will visit the doctor less,just like the situation in East Meria. What we have to pay attention tois that, though East Meria is a place near West Meria, their(4) may bemany differences between people in these two cities. And even havingmore fish can help, perhaps it cannot help that much as it does in theEast Meria.

More over, the arguer fails to convince me that colds are the realreason of absences from school and work. It is likely that a claimedexcuse of people who do not want to go to work or schol.

Finally, even we admit that eating a substantial amount of fish canreduce the rate of catching cold, there is no evidence which shows thatdaily use of Ichaid is a good way to prevent colds and lowerabsenteeism(5). Notice that, there are a lot of nutritional supplementthat we(6) can be derived from fish oil. It is likely that anothernutritional supplement, but not Ichthaid, which really helps inpreventing colds.

To sum up, this argument is unconvicing as it stands. To make it morelogically acceptable, the arguer must provide evidence showing that inthe area of West Meria, eating Ichthaid can kill the baterium of coldand colds are what exactly make people absent from school and work.
