TOPIC: ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

In this argument, the author concludes that Grove College should preserve its century-old female education rather than admit men into its programs, and it will improve moral among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially. However, there are several logical flaws in this argument.

To begin with, the author cites two dubious surveys in order to support his conclusion. On one hand, there are not exact numbers of the respondents in the statement. Perhaps, only a few students receive this survey. Therefore, they do not represent most students' views, which make the surveys unconvincing. On the other hand, the respondents tell lie. From the statement, we can see that the respondents are all girls, so it is possible that girls are too to show their views upon these kinds of surveys. There is also a possibility that the respondents who agree with the change perhaps mean to be with college, which lead them to tell lie at last. In a word, without accounting these possibilities mentioned above, the surveys cited are dubious and useless.

Even if most students disagree with the coeducation, the author unfairly assumes that it will lower morale among students. Perhaps, if men are admitted into its program, they will improve morale among students, which cannot be foreseen. Therefore, without any evidence and ruling out this possibility, the author fails to persuade me.

Furthermore, the author overlooks the possible that the coeducation will prevent alumni from keeping supporting the college financially. Perhaps, because the extent of students is wider, more alumni will support the college financially, including not only women but also men. So the total number of money that alumni support to the college may increase. And the author has to provide more evidence.

Last but not the least, the author hastily claims that the college should not admit men into the college. Even if most students disagree with the coeducation, the college should pay more attention to their goal of the education. The educator should not only make decisions upon students' views, because not all suggestion supported by students are always proper. And the coeducation may benefit to not only students and school but also society. Therefore, the author cannot come to the finally conclusion only depending on the surveys.

To sum up, with the unreliable surveys and unconvincing evidence, the author fails yo persuade me.
