The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000.  Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In this report, the arguer recommend to raise salary and give promotion to Professor Thomas for her demonstrated teaching and research abilities that her classes are among the largest at the university and the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Also the arguer fears that Professor Thomas would leave Elm City University if without a raise and promotion. Nevertheless, there are several fallacies in the report and the arguer’s anxiety might be unnecessary.

First, the fact that Professor Thomas’ classes are among the largest at the university does not absolutely demonstrate her popularity among students. The report does not involve information about what kind of courses the university mainly provides, which might influence directly the class arrangement of the university. If biology study and teaching plays a significant part in the university, it will be not surprise that a professor of botany have large classes. It is also likely that many students in the university prefer botany courses and other professors of botany have similarly amount of classes or even more. Further, lack information about students’ reflection about Professor Thomas’ classes like survey of students’ attitude towards the courses, after all whether a professor is popular need to take students into account.

Similarly, the fact that the money Professor Thomas has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years does not indicate her demonstrated research abilities. The arguer fails to illustrate whether the amount of research money is a relatively high level in the university or higher than what other professor could bring, whereas the salary has nothing to do with the research money. If botany study is one of the most predominant subjects of the university, it seems that the amount in the report is not high or even low to an emphasized research project. Moreover, what is the situation about botany research in other similar universities? This information would also help to evaluate the professor’s research ability.

Thirdly, even Professor Thomas is proved to be demonstrated, it is suspicious whether she is merit a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson. If the salary raise and position promotion is beyond what she should obtain, it might cause others’ confusion and unequal feeling, which would harm the university stability and health development. Further more, no evidence can prove Professor Thomas could be competent for Department Chairperson, for the position needs more management ability where lots of professors are much adepter in research. If the professor is not equal to the position, an anticipated administration disorder might come out.

Finally, the arguer shows an anxiety that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University without salary raise and position promotion. He/she might be wrong to conclude the assertion, for the arguer does not inquire about the professor’s attitude. It is entirely that the professor prefers the circumstance of the university and has been used to work there. Also there might not be much better local college for her to choose while she would not like to work outside. If so, she would rather still like to stay in the university.

In sum, the report fails to provide sufficient evidence to support the conclusion. To be more persuasive, the arguer should offer clear information about the ability of Professor Thomas and situation of Elm City University.

我觉得反驳论证的功夫已经不错的,很对路子,
结尾段有些简单了,通常要提出一些对材料完整性的改进建议。
