"Sometimes imagination is a more valuable asset than experience. People who lack experience are free to imagine what is possible and thus can approach a task without constraints of established habits and attitudes."

Imagination or experience, which one is more important? The assertion believes that imagination serves as a more valuable asset than experience, however, from my point of view; the assertion amplifies the merits of imagination, while ignoring some irreplaceable function of experience in exploring of unknown.
Undeniably, imagination brings about new ideas and thoughts, which is crucial in the exploring of new methods and approaches to some tasks. That is the reason why in many endeavors, neophytes are more likely to make breakthroughs. On the contrary, those with rich experience are more inclined to be restrained by experience, conservative opinions and classical methods, which may prevent them from creative thinking and in turn impede them to find new methods and ideas to solve problems. Skimming the history, we may find many examples young people without much experience worked out problems which remains unsolved tens of or even hundreds of years. Among all of these examples, the most flamboyant one involves the accomplishment of Einstein. He published his famous article expressing the concept of photons at the age of 26. Thanks to the creative thinking and unconstraint mind, Einstein pointed out that light exists both in the form of particle and wave and solved the problem of the essence of light which has been discussed for hundreds of years.
Yet, experience lays fundaments to ensure imaginations not to become beautiful but unrealistic dreams. In spite that imagination brings about new ideas and thought, it is practice and experience that convert these ideas into reality. Human being has long imagined flying in the vast sky; however, the imagination of flying can not be realized by daydreaming but practice. It is by hundred of times unsuccessful experiments that the Wright Brothers invented the airplane, which facilitate people’s flying dream with real wings. The unsuccessful experiments provided valuable experience for the Wright Brothers and guide their practice, which ultimately result in the invention of airplanes. The example illustrates that only imagination without experience, imagination is nothing more than beautiful dreams and can never impel the development of society in any realm.
Also, sometimes, experience inspires the imagination. Experience broadens our horizons and deepens our understanding about things. And with a wide horizon and deep understanding, we can observe things in a profound and comprehensive view, which stimulates and assists our imaginations. In science realm, Newton concluded the three classical laws through long time’s observation on how apples fall onto ground. The ordinary experience inspired Newton to arrive at the imagination that the earth is round. Actually, quantities of scientific development comply with the process that, imagine logically based on the experience and then to test the imagination by applying it into practice. In literature realm, the rich life experience stimulated and enabled Shakespeare to write a myriad of plays which reflected the society in his time. It is widely accepted that without rich experience or the ability to observe other’s life experience few people can become an excellent writer. From the examples above, it is safe to
To sum up, as tools to enrich our knowledge and explore the unknown, imagination is equal important comparing to experience. Imagination endows us the ability to think creatively and even dream, while experience converts the creative thinks into reality and sometimes inspires the imagination. |
