Issue41. Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

The speaker states that the nonmainstream areas as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits plays more important role in satisfying human needs, than mainstream science. In my point of view, both of them are vital in current society.

One of human natures is to explore the unknown world, which satisfies our curiosity and helps us to accumulate our knowledge about the world around us. The purpose of both nonmainstream and mainstream areas of inquiry is to gain a good understanding of the outside and inside world, and the major differences are the methods they used and the year they born. The great achievements accomplished by science can demonstrate his importance, which needs no more words to praise. Something like astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits should be made good advantages as well.

The nonmainstream areas of inquiry just like an old grandmother who can give us a wisdom answer when we come across something difficult in our lives. May be the grandmother does not know why the computer can calculate a complex mathematics problem fast and accurately, or may be she does not know why the video camera can record things happened yesterday truly, but she does know that when ants are busy moving to a higher place , you should bring an umbrella in case of rain. The disciplinarians which are summarized by mysterious subjects, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits include our ancestor’s observation and comprehension of the world, which has been tested by time.

The science just like a youth who can discover the secrets of the nature and the society by a lot of advanced technology and tools. His role is not only to observe a phenomenon but also to explain it by a firm way and control it accurately. However, the developments of lots of things are very slow, so the youth cannot see the whole processes of them, when it comes to this moment the men should turn to the senior. In contemporary, the nonmainstream are more and more popular just show that the science will step into a new stage.

Nevertheless, in our society, a few people are indulging in the nonmainstream areas of inquiry, who believes that they can forecast the future of their career, love, health and so forth, which mystify the fact and misunderstand the function of them. This trend misleads lots of people to regard the nonmainstream as non-science, or even anti-science. Both of cognitions about nonmainstream are unfair, the former ones will be despaired by the results of their so-called future-telling; the latter ones will miss lots of precious deposits left by our forebears.

To summarize, the nonmainstream is the resource of exploring nature, which cannot be replaced by science totally, and cannot take the place of science too. In the era of science, more and more people realize the importance and value of them, which is a good phenomenon, but we should have a correct attitude to the functions of them and prevent us from depending so much on them.
