Issue7: The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records.

Is it possible than video camera would finally replace written records as the only form of documentation? Definitely would not. Because though the continuous innovation of electronic technology has made the utilizing of video camera ever more convenient and accurate, it is limited in some aspects when compared with written records. On the other hand, although documenting by writing is traditional and somehow limited as well, it can attain what can not be gained through shooting with a camera.

Accurate document is a kind of commemoration of the past, of an affair or a person, and sometimes may be significantly facilitating. Imagine，how wonderful and amazing it would be to watch the childhood you playing exactly before you when you grow up or get old and how soothing it would be to feel your beloved family members and friends in a video tape who have unfortunately left this world too early and you missed so much. In addition, video camera has now been wildly used as evidence helping the police or detective find the real criminal. Because of its accuracy, the criminal can not deny his commitment in face of the video record, and subsequently efficiency of dealing with problems will be significantly improved.

Although video camera technology has been so broadly used and function well, it can not completely take place of the way of writing as making records. Written records, with a long history, have their own uniqueness and importance. Albeit those written records are less accurate and not so direct in conveying the scenes, they could also depict the process vividly if made by a skilled author. What’s more important, written records would not only describe the exact scene in the central spot, but depicts clearly relevant information such as the history background, the causes and effect of the event, people’s attitude and reaction toward it and so on as well. However, it is extremely difficult and even impossible to make use of a camera to document all these aspects at the same time as it would cost too much.

Additionally, depicting of emotions and reflections is another factor that has made written records so unique and essential. As a special and advanced species, it is the capacity of thinking that has distinguished human being with other species in the universe. Thus, recording of activity of thinking would also be vital for the completeness of the records of human beings experience as that of the objective things. Philosophy, for instance, is what can not be recorded by video cameras as what have involved in this subject are completely related to human’ s thinking., such abstract activities that couldn’t be recorded in a visible way.

Generally speaking, both video camera and writing are important ways of documenting with their own advantages and disadvantages; both of them can not be taken place by each other; both would enrich our lives.
