I fundamentally agree with this statement. In the society now, though we can obtain most of knowledge or results from mainstream science such as technology, biology and so forth, the importance of some nonmainstream areas should not be ignored for they insofar explain some problems that mainstream science cannot. But, we still should keep this in mind that not all the nonmainstream science is beneficial to us.

To begin with, when referring to some nonmainstream areas such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits, we admit that they play essential roles in our lives no matter in the past or at present. In ancient, people observed the change of clouds or wind in nature in order to forecast the weather, and moreover, some people were good at looking into the changing of stars which was called the early astrology. And, as we all know, when we see movies involving wars in the ancient age, there always exists a master who looks into the sky or counts numbers using his fingers, and then he will tell his emperor whether it is smart for the army to fight today. This is the elementary kind of fortune-telling.

Back to now, we are living in an ever-changing and ever-developing society, we pay more attention to mainstream science, that is to say, that the mainstream science like technology, astronomy gain the dominant positions in current time. However, we still can see the essential efforts that some nonmainstream areas have made to the development of our society. Let us take the following as an example. Almost every country supports the development in astronomy and leaders are willing to pay large amount of funds in this field. Actually, there is a close relationship between astrology and astronomy. In the past, some astrologists had recorded the change in the cosmos and even predicted the future situation which can be used to explain some situations today. Now, scientists in astronomy use telescopes to observe cosmos, and according to the movement of stars or planets they gain some results. Coincidently, these scientists find that what they have gotten by using modern facilities is uniform/ coherent to the prediction which was written by astrologists in ancient time. So, through this discovery, scientists will prefer to use the former prediction to forecast the future in our current lives.

However, we have seen how crucial some nonmainstream areas are, but we cannot say that all these kinds of areas are good to our lives. It is wise for us to distinguish some bad areas from good ones. For example, terrorism is the main topic of many countries, which lead us to be afraid a lot. Terrorism is one of the nonmainstream areas in the society now, but it is obvious that it destroys our lives rather than gives us peace. Terrorism brings us enmity, fear and evil, which we should avoid or we do not want to be involved into anymore. So not all the nonmainstream areas are benefit to our society, which means that we need to insight further and tell angles from evils.

To sum up, researching in nonmainstream areas help us better recognize the society, and this is also a way to keep stability and security in human life. So, as if we avoid meeting with the horrible areas like terrorism, we can get more benefits from most kinds of fields no matter whether they are mainstream science or not. Moreover, combining nonmainstream areas and mainstream science may contribute great achievements in the future.
