It is prevalent to divide the nation into two kinds: the developed and the developing. Most western countries, well-known developed countries, boast its welfare like democracy in politics, equality in the judicial and the comprehensiveness in medical treatment. Then, what's the criterion to identify the great nation? In my view, the general welfare serves as a fundamental indicator of the great nation. However, the greatness of a nation contains but not limit to the general welfare alone and it necessitates as well the achievements of the social elites and the environmental sustainability of the society.
In the first place, the social welfare may so comprehensively and objectively reflects the fundamental demand and expectation of the people in general that it shows us a clear picture of the social status. As we know, people’s welfare is the very purpose of the social development that embodies all the achievement, spiritual ones or material ones. Equipped with well-being like the sound medical care system dispelling the one’s concern of illness, the consistent pension provision freeing one from the worry about life after retiring and well-functioned social infrastructure facilitating daily commute and routine live, the society construct an order and comfortable living condition, where the social stability are maintained and sustainable progress are guaranteed. Furthermore, the sound welfare not only indicates the health and stability of the society but foreshadows and even warrants the society to prosper to the full potential. The U.S., widely recognized the modernist country in the world, also boast its reliable welfare system with little people concerned about their lives ahead. By contrast, countries fraught with starvation and sporadic miff on territory are the ones with least democratic social system and thus worst welfare.
However, it goes too far to form an unbalanced comment on a society merely through the estimation of its social welfare and the resort to the observation of the elite members like its leaders, artistes or scientists as reference makes the comment more objective and credible. Let’s focus our attention to the United Arab Emirates, one of the famed oil-output countries located in the Middle East which boast its most lavish Seven-Star Hotel. Affluent as the lives there appears to be, UAE can hardly be recognized as the great country. On the other hand, the achievement of the rulers, artists, or scientists serves as the miniature revealing the exact living conditions of people so that mirror the greatness of society in turn. Leaders influence the political affairs and orient the social development; artists guide the fashion and thus confine the spiritual value of people in the society by provide the artistic work; Scientists represent the most advancement in the science and technology. Thus by taking a combined look at these three aspects, we may get a clear picture of the society development.
Moreover, the factor of natural condition should not be overlooked in the evaluation of a country. From the environmental condition we can easily get the idea of people’s understanding of a dreamed world. The more developed a country is, the higher quality its people are and thus the more emphasis its people place to the environmental protection. It is not difficult to find that a large proportion of environmental-friendly countries are the developed countries. The Tokyo Protocol, the first official document declaring the importance of environmental protection, was also launched and enforced by the developed countries.
To sum up, the great nation is such an all-inclusive concept that any unilateral standard of estimation will undermine its accuracy. We need to take the social welfare as the start point and by the comprehensive analysis of political, artistic as well as the scientific aspects of a country to make a estimation more objective. |
