The following is a memorandum from the business managerof a television station.

"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to
national news and less time to weather and local news. During this period, most of
the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of
weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during
our late-night news program have canceled their advertising contracts with us.
Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid
losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand our coverage of weather
and local news on all our news programs."

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions
of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these
assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions
prove unwarranted.

The decision of the manager of a television station that expand their coverage of weather and local on all their news programs is tenable at the first glance given that the complaint and the loss of advertise contracts occur at the same time when the station devoted increased time to national news and less tome to weather and local news. However, this argument is not warranted until the arguer can prove the following assumptions.

First, the arguer assumed that most complaints from views resulted from the loss of weather and local news programs. While there are many other reasons leading to these complaints such as the decreasing quality of the programs, and too much advertisement, imprecise of the weather program, etc. In that case viewers will also compliant to the station. Therefore, the station cannot prove the assumption unless and until the argument rule out those reasons.

Second, the assumption the argument based on that the total account of complaints is extremely large, which lead to the conclusion that the amount of complaints to station's coverage of weather and local news, is groundless. In fact, the total amount of the complaints may be very small. Under this circumstance, “MOST” don't mean that many viewers complained the station but supported this change of coverage of programs at least not loathe. Hence，it’s not necessary, on this occasion, to expand the coverage of weather and local news on all news programs. In a short, the argument is not tenable if the arguer cannot prove this assumption.

Third, the assumption that the loss of advertising contracts with the station is the consequence of the change of the coverage of this station programs is also not proven. There are many other positions that will lead to this cancel. For example, those advertising firms maybe not operate well, their profits decrease recently or the other station can attract to more viewers than this station and so on. Therefore, the argument is not convincing unless the arguer can rule out those other reasons why those advertising firms cancel the contracts.

In conclusion, the argument is unpersuasive if the argument cannot prove above assumptions,
