As a phd, you don't need to make something work, you only need a paper. As a
worker, you really need your stuff to work. With this basic guideline
different, 5 years of work can mean totally different kind of experience.
If you are talking about coding, "academic code" usually means "crappy code"
to industry people. If you have experience transplanting code developed in
university to a real product in a company, you will understand.
