在申phd时遇到的困惑：

以下是系方的研究生事务官给我的回信：

Many thanks for your email. We have a number of academics that are conducting research in your areas of interest, including myself.

However, before we can enter into a dialogue with a prospective PhD student, it is vital for us to have the student's qualifications (particularly their academic record) assessed by the University International Student's office

That is, before we can process your application and ascertain a suitable supervisor for you, you will need to contact the University International Students' Office in order to provide us with an assessment of your qualifications.

All students who have obtained their under-graduate degree and research-based postgraduate degrees (in which a MBA may not qualify) at another university have to have their qualifications assessed.

给我回信的是该系的研究生事务联络官，同时也有导师身份，我给他发信时是咨询申请事宜的，并非直接表明想申请他的博士，我后来又给他发了封EMAIL，问是否在获得学位之后才能申请，他给了我下面的回复：

If you have the prerequisites to get into the PhD programme and we know your final grade of your Master's thesis, we will probably begin to process your application and ascertain suitable supervisors so your are all ready to begin in 2007.

以前听到很多建议是要想读博首先要和导师讨论课题，达成录取意向，然后再想学校提出申请，可是目前似乎倒了过来，是要先拿到学位才能提出申请，那么如此一来，如果我想继续申请，那么就不得不在明年毕业后面对一段等待时段，实际情况是这样么？这封回信是不是有不想录取我，只是在鼓励我一下的意思那？下一步我该做的是什么呢？广发email和各校的导师陶瓷是否合适？是否又负面影响（比如不按他们申请程序走，可能会招致反感）

我想申请的是LABOUR RELATIONS中的比较劳动关系和工会方向，目前我发了两篇国内的核心文章，都是这个方向的，做过两次全国性的社会调查，参与翻译两部学术书籍，目前的导师是荷兰的博士，且在美澳做过博士后，我目前所在的学校至少是国内top15了，请斑竹看看我申请博士有多大把握？

完全不知道。这辈子我也没打算读phd。

这个问题以前问过了吧，就是要你按正常的程序申请，先把材料递到国际学生办公室，等那里初评你的材料后，才会把你的材料递到你所申请的系里，到那时再讨论课题的问题。

The response from your Uni has clearly illustrated their application and assessment procedures. On the requirments of your school, you have to send your application documents to the International Student Office. In my opinon, you can email your eletronic docuemts ( including scanned papers and files) to the department you want to apply to and then you are supposed to receive some recommendations from the school. If your supervisor is available and your qualification is approved, you will be required to send your certificate documents. Many Universities are of pleasure to allocate supervisors to the potential applicants, based on applicants' majors and background. So, it is unnecessary to contact with your prospective professor in advance if you feel unconvinient.
By the way, according to what you wrote above, it seems that you had a great chance to succeed in your application for Ph.d. Considering the bad situation, you can also be offered a place of Master Degree by Research. In that case, it is easy for you to transfer it to Ph.d degree in the cousrse fo your master cadidature.
So, get out there and do it!
