170"The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."
Thousands of years has passed and the human history is written by millions of nations, which emerged, thrived and died out. Among those nations, most of which left without much significance in history, exists great nations that play such an important role that our life would be very different without them, such as ancient China, ancient Roman, ancient Egypt, etc. how could we define whether a nation is great or not. Somebody may claims that the surest indicator is the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists. Others may think it is the general welfare of all its people. These all play some part, but the real standard is whether it benefits the whole human beings, even after many generations.
In the first place, as every nation consists of people, the most elemental factor is the life of its people. that is to say, a nation whose people enjoy a happy and comfortable life is great, while a nation having great achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists but whose people benefit little from those and lead a poor and miserable life should not be regarded as a great nation. For example, Soviet had achieved a lot in science and politics, but it failed at last when it was unable to guarantee the basic live of its people. However, we should not neglect the importance of politics, arts and science, whose achievements will surely contribute to the general welfare of its people if utilized properly.
Nevertheless, if a nation concerns only about the general welfare of its own people and neglect other people’s rights, it should not be regarded as a great nation, either. It is obvious if we look back to the second world war, German and Japan invaded other nations for their own sake and regarded other peoples humbler than themselves. They established the happy life of their own people on other people’s pains. In that case, even if their own people achieved a lot, they were far from being great nations.
The great nations are all in common that they have abundant achievements in politics, arts and science, which made their people have a general welfare and are also great legacies for generations afterwards. China in Tang dynasty was one of the greatest nations in the world. It had great influence all over the world that other nations had to bend in front its ruler. The arts were also splendid and many important discoveries in science and inventions were achieved in that age. Its people also enjoyed a peaceful and rich life. Furthermore, the great achievements still benefited people decades later, which are also admired by people nowadays.
Therefore, as is illustrated above, the surest indicator of a great nation is the general welfare of the people, who are not limited to its own but extend to the rage of all human beings. In addition, the welfare is achieved by progress in the field of politics, arts and science. Therefore, to become a great one, a nation should make effort to develop in those field with the general welfare of all people as its principle. |
