64. Collectors prize the ancient life-size clay statuesof human figures made on Kali Island but have long wondered how Kalineseartists were able to depict bodies with such realistic precision. Sincearchaeologists have recently discovered molds of human heads and hands on Kali,we can now conclude that the ancient Kalinese artists used molds of actualbodies, not sculpting tools and techniques, to create these statues. Thisdiscovery explains why Kalinese miniature statues were abstract and entirelydifferent in style: molds could be used only for life-size sculptures. It alsoexplains why few ancient Kalinese sculpting tools have been found. In light ofthis discovery, collectors predict that the life-size sculptures will decreasein value while the miniatures increase in value.

（1）发现的人头和手的模具就可以确认这些模具一定是用来做真人雕塑的吗？我们无法确认说这些模具可能被用作其他的用途，比如在祭祀中用于代替真人，比如只是利用来生产帽子和手套等的用来比量大小的而已，毕竟还没有发现全身的模具。
（2）很少发现雕刻工具和相应的技术能够说明古人不是采用它们来完成真人雕像的制作的嘛？很少发现并不等同于数量上本身就很少，有可能是因为还没有被大量挖掘，或者由于古人使用的工具材料比较脆弱，可能在这么长的时间里已经被时间的尘埃吞噬殆尽了。（These tools may be built from somevulnerable tools which have been swallowed into the ash of time）另外，如果无法确切证明这些模具确实是制造真人雕像的话，反而提供了使用雕刻工具及其技术来雕刻这些真人雕像的可能性。
（3）这些模具都是真人大小可以说明古人就不是利用模具而是雕刻工具及其技术来制作微缩雕像的嘛？微缩模具还没有被发现，从而这点理论其实是很脆弱的。另外，即便微缩雕像都很抽象而且形态各异也不一定就是手工雕刻的结果。比较抽象可能是古人有特殊的需要，形态各异则可能是使用各种不同的模具（较小的模具也比较好制作）。另外，如果第二点中确实能证明古人的雕刻工具和技术很缺乏的话，反而让我们怀疑这些微缩雕塑是手工雕刻的可能性。
（4）即便以上的推断都是准确的，为什么微缩雕像会升值而真人大小的雕像会贬值？即便确实微缩雕像中手工艺甚至艺术的成分要远远强于真人雕像，但是一来真人雕像本身就具有非常高的历史和人文价值，它会不会贬值很难定论；另外，微缩雕像确实很受收藏家喜欢是个问题，如果很少人喜欢收藏微缩雕像的话，那么其市场价值便不会有太大的波动。

While thecollectors' prediction may be true that this discovery will decrease the valueof the life-size sculptures on one hand, and on the other hand, increase thevalue of the miniatures, which is based on the fact that mold-built sculptures contains not as much handicraft and estheticism than miniatures made insculpting tools. However, further exploration of the argument reveals severalproblems of these evidences, which may not be sufficient to support the conclusion.

    To begin with, we argue that the discoveryof molds of human heads and hands in Kali can really indicate that thoselife-size sculptures are created using molds of actual bodies. These molds maybe used by Kallinese for sacrifice to gods or ancestors to replace for the liveconsidering philanthropies for all creatures. Another possibility remains thatthese molds of head and hand are used for manufacturing hats and gloves as sizecriterions since no mention about molds of full bodies being found. All theseassumptions, to some extent, attenuate the strength of the conclusions that therecent-discovered molds are used for the life-size sculptures.
    Secondly, eventhese molds are sometimes used for making life-size sculptures, can we justpredicted that no sculpting tools and techniques are involved in their fabricationsand concludes that few sculpting tools and techniques are discovered? Maybe thetools as well as some techniques remain undiscovered currently, while in the nearfuture large amount of the tools and even the techniques will be found. Anotherreason is that these tools are just too vulnerable to resist the corruption ofmoist air underground, the majority of which has been swallowed into the ashesof time. The more uncertainties that these assumptions present the less cogentlythe evidence would support the author’s argument.
    Thirdly, thesemolds sized as human bodies do not eliminate the possibilities that the miniaturesshould also made from molds. As above-mentioned the smaller-sized molds mayremain deeply buried or simply vanished for some reasons. The abstract of theminiatures may reason from specific requirements of some traditional activitiesof Kalinese. Meanwhile, distinct molds for fabricating miniatures, which aremore possible due to their smaller size, can also explain the differences instyle.
    Finally, even allthe above-mentioned holes are comprehensively filled, there still existinsufficient facts of the decrease in the value of life-size sculptures andmeanwhile, the increase in the value of miniatures. The life-size sculptureitself, because of the superior realistic precision, is quite historically and archaeologicallyvalued, whose value may not be depreciated simply by the recent discovery.Furthermore, the market of antiques is highly dominated by the collectors. Iffew collectors are in fund of the miniatures, or the majority of them are much moreinterested in the life-size sculptures, the collectors’ predictions may notstand so concretely.
    In conclusion,many problems still remain to conclude the collectors' prediction. To strengthenthe argument, further discoveries on the molds as well as the sculpting toolsand techniques should be carefully followed. And survey should be conducted toverify the responses in the group of collectors for both life-size sculpturesand miniatures.
