137"What we call progress is a matter of exchanging one problem for another." 我们所谓的进步不过是新问题代替老问题吧了.
I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s broad assertion that progress is a matter of exchanging one problem for another to some extent.,because we are facing boundless problems which seem never go to the end, when a latent progress from current problem has solved, a new situation and fresh problem may emerge at once. However, there is no need to be pessimistic about progress. People should work hard in order to put our society forward and face new problems bravely.
To begin with, nothing is perfect and flawless in our world including the progress. As the progress solving the old problems and giving benefits to people it also brings about many new ones. People only have the ability to find out the problems around them, no one can know the future completely though people may foresee some problem by logical analysis. So progress without any new problems is unwarranted. Consider, for example,Industrialization is a great progress is human history as it making our society more productive, but it also has brought about many serious environmental problems, such as the greenhouse effect caused by the exhaust gas gaving off by the industries and motor cars , the disertation resulting from the deforestation of many forests . Our ecosystem is very weak by the harm of industrial pollution. It is easy to see the disadvantages of the progress.
Another reason why I generally agree with the stetement is that , in the realism exchanging one problem has no correct direction and no best solution, so it is often possible that a progress achieved during the resolution of a current problem ,invent a new one, maybe even worse at the same time. One oblivious instance is the atomic power that shows a promising future while yields the potential danger of nucleic leakage, moreover, it seems that the anxiety of its danger looms larger around the world; the depression overshadowed the merits of progress and made some pessimist underplay it as merely a matter of exchanging one problem for anther.
Admittedly,it is essential to recognize the limits of our knowledge and understanding for acquiring new facts and making progress. First, those unknown or beyond our understanding always turn into the subject we studying, thus we can find new problems and acquire new facts. And when people find some problems cannot be resolved in the field of positive figures, negative figures come about. When Fleming was puzzled by the death of the germs, penicillin, a biotic medicine, was invented. Second, this awareness always plays the role as a stimulation, from which the curiosity and interests arouse. When people find some phenomeons hard to understand, they will establish hypothesis and test them or they will draw common rules from more similar things. All these actions are propelled by the curiosity and enthusiasm. For example, not knowing which material is suitable for making the bulb, Edison, the famous inventor, tried hundreds of stuff and experienced failure after failure. What encouraged him to go on is the believe that though his knowledge is limitless, unlimitness experiments can kill off uncertain problems .Third, taking the problem with an objective attitude, It is disproportional that we tend to resolve all the questions perfectly. Instead, what we should do really is to keep the placid mentality to face to the whole process to resolve the problem step by step instead of the eager for the quick success and instant benefit. After all, people are making the progress, and meanwhile the problems which are originated by human beings as well are changing to complicate.
In sum, though progress also brings some new problems to us as the old ones are solved, there is no need to be pessimistic about progress. Also we should not be stunned by so many difficulties we are facing by knowing that these problems, although currently insurmountable, will be conquered some time in the future. More over, people should have firm determination to overcome one obstacle after another , the hope of resolving a problem at just one time is the indolence of a coward .

Mencius said,"When heaven is about to confer a great office on any man,it first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil.It exposes his body to hunger………….By all these methods, it stimulates his mind, consolidates his character, and increases his efficiency".
