To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.
----正文----
Should an effective leader maintain the highest ethical and moral standards? People of different ages, backgrounds, and occupations would have divergent opinions. Some people may claim as the author, while other people hold opposite attitudes. In my perspective, I strongly agree with the author that as an effective leader, it is a fundamental virtue to maintain(high,结尾提到了,这里就应该也点上high) ethical and moral standards.(中间一句可否再稍带写上为什么other people may hold opposite attitudes,比如加上on the consideration of the difficulty in maintaining highest moral standards, 否则表达意思和前面有重复的嫌疑,你说呢?)
To begin with, the main reason for the contention is that as a leader, a public official, he or she should set a good example for the public; what's more, serving common people from heart and soul is the duty of leaders and officials. If a leader performs or conducts certain immoral behaviors regardless of its special status, then how can citizens trust them(前面的a leader 和后面的them不对应)? How can he or she lead their people? How can they make contribution to the society? For fitting examples one need to look no further than the Watergate, which engulfed president Nixon and many of his supporters in a variety of illegal acts in order to compete with his opponents during the election period, and the occurrence culminated the first resignation of a U.S. president. Now, people depreciate Nixon for his immoral deeds, which seriously hurt not only his countrymen’s hearts, but also harmed the system of democratic society(可否改为the democratic system of society). Another example is the sex scandal concerning president Clinton, which not only contributed to his bad fame, but also impacted people’s impressions towards the government.
Once a leader endeavors to try his best to benefit people, to enhance the living quality of the people, as Lincoln had proposed " the government that of the people, by the people, for the people should never perish from the earth", he would undoubtedly win universal respects. Such examples are ample to supply, in China, we have premier Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Mao Zedong, those outstanding and effective leaders devoted all their lives to the nation, to their people, which undeniably resulted in the people's praise (earned people's admiration是不是更好些,因为resulted in 感情色彩上不是褒义词). Until now, people still remember premier Zhou, who was diligent, devotion, economic, prudent, and considerate. These valuable ethical and moral standards are pressed (preserved)in people's hearts forever. Turn to America; distinguished leaders such as Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King etc. came to my mind suddenly(有些假,你怎么可能一下子想到这么多方方面面的人,建议把suddenly 去掉). Take Washington for instance, at present people evaluate him as " first man in war, first man in peace, first man in the hearts of his countrymen", all his life, he initiated (successfully leaded)the independence war and won the independence of America(under his leadership, the Democratic Country was established好像比he won the independence of America 要好些), what's more, when he was required to elect for the president for the third time, he declined in the motivation of keeping the vitality of the politics of America. Moreover, all through his years, he made great efforts to construct a powerful country (a country with great economic and military power)and increase the welfare of citizens.
In business field, it is also the case, nowadays, as the development of the society and specification (specialization吗?) of the society. Inevitably many companies need to cooperate with each other, or do business with other companies, in the process of cooperation, leaders should be honest and always keep promises. Once a leader maintains these fundamental moral standards, other people are willing to communicate and or collaborate with him/her.
To sum, from what has been discussed above, I can confidently conclude that an effective leader must pursue the virtue of high ethical and moral standards. For the reason that hold high moral standards would win the trust of the mass (public), which contributes to the higher efficiency. In addition, as a civilized human, every common people must comply the most basic ethical and moral standards, let alone the leaders.
