Talking about the importance ofreading in education and teaching, no one can deny that academic reading is anessential necessity in both graduate school and teaching. Then, what kind of materialwe should choose? The popular ones or the classic ones? Personally, I hold adivergent opinion with the statement.
Convincing argument can be made that reading playsan increasing pivotal role in the richness of one’s knowledge and expansion one’sview. Firstly, Thomas Carlyle once said, in books lies the soul of the wholepast time. By reading we will acquire knowledge, accept high moral values, learn to distinguish right from wrong and draw on from the old experience. Ingraduate school, the special period of improving oneself, reading will lift one’sacademic level and generate creativity. In teaching aspect, students willbenefit much from the vast stores of knowledge of their teacher. Since the dutyof teaching is to impart knowledge and cultivate student’s characteristics, theteacher has no other choice but to promote his or her own brain store andpersonality charm.
In order to understand and teach English, we haveno other option but to read. However, does the popular culture will satisfy theappetite of students and I myself? Does the pop culture stand for the rightnessand light? Will students be immune to some low-taste pop culture? I think theanswer is obvious. In my mind, the impact of classic work prevails over thefashionable but easy-to-fade-away pop culture. Therefore, I prefer to read someold but elegant work to clean my soul rather than let pop culture contaminatemy mind.
Even though the merit of introducing the popculture into education is clearly evident, it is unreasonable for teachers to instillstudents the pop culture work indiscriminately. After all, What the mass media offers is not popular art, but entertainment whichis intended to be consumed like food, forgotten, and replaced by a new dish.---W.H.Auden
To conclude, either in graduate school or in Englishteaching, reading should be given priority for its crucial importance. Nevertheless,as a teacher and student, one is well-advised to be more prudent in the bookselection procedure.
