1.不确定薰衣草的作用还是安眠药的作用
2.实验中其他条件变化影响结果
3.不知道是否真正治愈(第三周真的好吗/以后会怎样)
TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.
*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

Based on a three-week experiment, the result seems well supported. However, due to the flaws in the implement of the study and the soundless reasoning the conclusion is unconvincing.
The threshold problem of this study is caused by the sleeping medication used in the first week. Undoubtedly, in the first week it was the medicine that worked on the volunteers. As it comes to the third week, there is an assumption that the affection of the drugs had been diminished to the lowest point. However, a little influence is too much. Unless a test result can be provided to illustrate no drugs existed in patients' bodies, the function of lavender can not be justified thoroughly. Moreover, since the scent may not be ever lasting, evident is needed to prove that in the third week the strength of lavender reached a certain degree to be effective.
Furthermore, the basic condition of the experiment is also doubtful. To begin with, although at night the volunteers were well controlled and monitored in that room, their daytime activities may not be kept normal. It is possible that the change of life habit and well controlled motion in that period of time help them to get a better sleep. Secondly, as it is mentioned in the article, the reason they feel tired should be result from the test which made them drive a long way to have a sleep. In that case, no wonder they can got a longer sleep, because they were so tired. Thirdly, the method of how to get the results of the quality of sleep does not been given. If they can not exclude the influence of the testers' psychological incline, the study can only be a cheating.
Last but not the least, whether the patients have really got cured is not well justified. They do not give out a standard and provide evident to say the conditions have qualified the standard. The results are just come from a compare to the first two weeks. Is their sleeping time in the third week long enough? What is more, the further qualities of the volunteers' sleep remind unknown. In order to prove those tester have truly recovered from insomnia the following survey must be done. Until the result can prove the treatment is effective, I can not be convinced.
In sum, the three main defect of this article weaken my belief in its conclusion. The author should take the result of using sleeping medication, the other factors that may effect the experiment, and how to prove the real effect of the treatment into consideration.
