TOPIC: ISSUE84 - "In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field."

Is it possible to make a great contribution to any field without being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field? This is a high controversial issue which is hard to answer. In my viewpoint, I strongly agree that if anyone who wants to make some important contribution to a field, he or she must be influenced by past achievements of many fields, not only the field studied.
First of all, no matter what field, it is important to be influenced by past achievements within the field studied. When it comes to the science field, almost all the achievements are based on the previous achievements by scientist before. The knowledge which we study are all found and induced by previous knowledge. Then, we use these knowledge to rebuild and improve the system of science and perfect our world. Moreover, many new inventions are created based on previous achievements. For example, if there is no electrical chips, the computer will never comes into our lives; if there is no the powerful dynamo, there will be no cars; if there is no electricity, many electrical devices will never appears. As a result, the previous achievements lead to the new achievements.
On the other hand, even the achievement is proved wrong now is still useful and helpful for the new achievements. With the development of science and technology, the view and method we observe the world are changing all the time. So it is no surprise that we prove that some achievements before is wrong and out of date. However, it still leads to new achievements. As a result, through deeply studying the previous achievements, we can know the reason why it is wrong. Then, using the new viewpoint and method, we can get new achievements. Take the Relative Theory for example, Einstein deeply study the classical system of physics, and found out the contradict facts. Through hard and tough induce process, he found the Relative Theory which entirely changed the system of the physics world at last.
In the third place, achievements from other fields which is related to the field researched should also be known and studied. In nowadays, fields are all connected. Some important discoveries from one field can lead to many achievements in other fields. For example, the results from the animal field can be used in the science of society. The biology achievements can be used in the field of control science. So it is important to know and study as many previous achievements as possible for father development.
To draw the conclusion, the previous achievements, no matter right or wrong, should be cherished, because they can leads to new achievements not only its own field, but also can influence many other fields. |
