154."Both parents and communities must be involved in the local schools. Education is too important to leave solely to a group of professional educators."
The school is the primary place where children receive education. Although the school system can run smoothly without the help of parents and communities, it cannot achieve the full potential of every student. When parents and communities are involved in the local schools, they should cooperate with the professional educators. If they care too much about their own benefits, they will disrupt the regular operation of schools.
In many countries, it is an obligation for everyone to go to school for several years, where children can receive education systematically. With professional knowledge of education, teachers know how to cultivate students, give them knowledge of different fields, and teach them right from wrong. Schools also have plenty of teaching facilities, such as library, laboratory and sports ground, which are essential in the education. However, teachers cannot pay enough attention to every student. They probably know more about those who do better in study. As a result, teachers cannot make the education totally suitable for every student and realize their full potentials. Besides, not every teacher is truly responsible for students, and even if all of them are very responsible, they cannot care about the behavior of every student all the time, because they are not the parents and because there are so many students while they have limited time and energy. What is more, if students are always confined in schools, they do not know what the outside world is like and they will have a limited scope of the society. To solve these problems, parents and communities should be involved in the local schools.
Parents are the first teacher for every student. They understand their children best, and they know what their potential is. If parents and teachers can cooperate with each other, parents can provide teachers information about their children, such as what they really like and what they are good at. In this way, teachers can make the education more suitable for the students by arranging some proper lessons and activities according to their interests. Teachers can also inform parents of their children’s bad behaviors. Since parents are responsible for such problems and they seriously care about their own children, they will focus on these problems and solve them effectively. Communities should also cooperate with teachers. If teachers think their students need to accumulate some social experiences, communities can provide appropriate opportunities for students to contact with society, which is an important way of education as well. And since children live in the community and what they experience can significantly influence their behaviors, the community should try to provide a healthy atmosphere for children. So when parents and communities cooperate with teachers properly, the education can be more effective.
However, if communities and teachers interfere with regular operations of schools too much, they will make the education in complete disorder. Parents may care too much about their own children, and even when they make some serious mistakes, parents do not want them to be punished. In this way, children will be accustomed to relying on their parents, and rules and regulations of schools will be of no use. Parents may also request changes of school curriculum according to their own children’s interests. Since different students have different interests and parents probably do not know what curriculum is most suitable for students, schools will have difficulty in establishing a proper curriculum. In the same way, communities may also have their own ideal curriculum out of their intentions of developing local cultures or promoting local economy. All these interference will impede effective operation of school education.
In conclusion, without the help of communities and parents, schools can run smoothly, but the education can be more effective if communities and parents are involved properly. However, if parents care too much about their own children and communities care too much about their own benefits, they will disrupt the effective operation of schools. |
