诚然，科学研究的目的在很大程度上是为了contribute to the larger society。而很多学者的研究正是为了更好更快地解决pressing social and historical problems and hence benefit a larger society. 这些研究have obtained more concerns from the government, the common as well as the whole society.
  但是，科学家研究自己选择的领域不光要考虑社会效益，自己的兴趣往往是同样重要的。
  但是，如果只是考虑个人兴趣，而忽视了社会效益，会造成什么后果呢？
  实际上，是科学家自己决定自己的研究领域—科学家的兴趣，和科学工作的社会责任感、良知。前者是科学家进行研究的内在动力（毕竟有些科学研究注定充满了阻碍，过程也很艰难），而后两者就代表了可能的社会效益，是科学研究的外在动力。

1．All the discovery and invention should serve the society, no matter what it is. 当然科学家也要考虑到研究对社会可能的影响纳税人的钱；对社会有危害的研究(克隆，核武器)

2. But scholars and researchers should not only work for public interests, they should have their own tastes and interests. They shouldn’t become the market-oriented.

3. 许多科学家凭自己的兴趣研究，最后成果仍然对社会有益.兴趣激发的研究更有动力，且容易成功

4. It is well advised that they combine both together. On the one hand, they can produce good works by their tastes, on the other hand, they can also meet the demand of the market.
