As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.


Modern era witnesses the fact that advanced technology that boots the development of modern society by helping solve problems for people. On the contrary, is it likely that technology limits the ability of humans to think for themselves? I, in this discussion, tend to claim that innovative technology does make individual willingly count on technology to gain solutions instead of thinking for themselves. This tendency is derives from through technology’s harm for three populations: student, employees and society.

Students, especially those who are in primary school or middle school, are and should be asked to do mathematical calculations in a traditional way, calculating with pens and paper, instead of using calculator-a product of technology. It is essential not only because traditional way develops a student’s skill of calculation, but also due to that it makes a student really understand what the process of mathematic, say arithmetic. Otherwise, if a student were permitted to get answers from calculator immediately, then he or she would have merely written the right answer and loosen the chance to require the ability of calculating. In Silicon Valley, the symbol of US high technology, there exits a school that forbid to apply any electronic products including laptop, Ipad and etc., in order to cultivate their students’ basic skills of thinking. The reason of founding such sholl is that even the most brilliant IT elites consider technology limit human’s ability to thinking for themselves.

It is no doubt that the emergence of high technology like computer and numerous programs based on it is beneficial to almost every industry. We could credit efficiency improvement of work to the increasing speed of computer or updating program. However, do you really think technology would replace individual intelligence in the seeing future? Obviously the answer is no. Application of such intelligent program weakens employees’ willingness of thinking for themselves so that they are simply working relying on high technology and have little creativeness derived from the thinking. The benefit of technology development, in my opinion, is much more less than its harm to people’s ability. Consider, for instance, a circumstance that technology cannot contribute to human beings that much, we would force ourselves to think more and come out with solutions that may be much better than the answers computer gives us.

As for society, the technology might be both beneficial and harmful. Yet as for as I am concerned, the harmful outcomes are in the majority and its restriction to our thinking ability is the most harmful outcome. First, the technology’s function of solving problems make individual unwilling to work out solutions by themselves, which is a great damage to creativity generated only by brain activity. Second, technology brings about efficiency including improving calculation speed for science research, as well as inefficiency that far more people are doing an exactly the same thing when they work which lead to the result that minority of our specie are concentrating on meaningful things that can truly benefit our world. Due to that fact that technology restricts us to a certain mechanical work, the ability of thinking for ourselves cannot be fully utilized.

All in all, I insist the point that technology does benefit us by solving many problems but its limitation to our thinking ability is a serious harm that cannot be ignored. As is elucidated above, harm of technology in three different populations: student, employees and society warn us to face the shortcoming of advanced technology so as to use its advantages while overcome its limitation to human ability to think for themselves.
