Argument167
A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.
*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

In the argument, the arguer concludes that the scent in lavender flowers is effective to cure insomnia. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer cites a survey which includes 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia and last of three weeks. After careful examination, this argument suffers from several critical fallacies.

In the first place, the survey the arguer cites to prove the effect of lavender flowers is questionable. For one thing, it includes only 30 volunteers. It is apparently that those 30 people could not represent the whole people. For another thing, three weeks is not long enough to examine the effect of lavender flowers. It is perhaps the altered environment that causes to the longer sleep in the three weeks. After three weeks, people are adapt to the scent of lavender flowers and may again fall into insomnia. Without ruling out such possibilities, the author’s conclusion is unconvincing.

Moreover, the arguer ignore to mention the volunteers’ s reactions in the third week. Since volunteers feel more tired than before in the second place. It is fairly possible that volunteers will feel even more tired in the third week. If this assumption is true, then the effect of lavender flowers to cure insomnia is dubious. The reason why people want to cure insomnia is that it lead to sleepless in night and tiredness in day, and thus do negative impacts on people’s lives and work. If lavender flowers result in more sleep in night ,but at the same time cause to more tiredness in day, which is the same thing as insomnia does, then, apparently, it does not really cure insomnia.

Last but not least, the arguer fails to points out the effect of lavender flowers without medication. In the first week, the volunteers take both medication and lavender flowers and they sleep soundly. However, it is perhaps that lavender flowers together with medication could lead to a better sleep. In the last two weeks, volunteers  discontinues their medication. However, it is possible that the influence of the medication in the first week continues. In conclusion, there is no information concerns with the individual effect of the lavender flowers.

To sum up, the arguer fails to convince that the lavender flowers could cure insomnia. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer should cite a survey involves more people and last for a longer time. Meanwhile, the arguer should also record what people feel during the survey. Meanwhile, the arguer should provides effect of people who only use lavender flowers to cure insomnia.

It is apparently that those 30 people could not represent the whole people. For another thing, three weeks is not long enough to examine the effect of lavender flowers. It is perhaps the altered environment that causes to the longer sleep in the three weeks//怎么直接讲到第三周了,应该最好说环境的改变使一,二三周都有影响,一一说明//. After three weeks, people are adapt to the scent of lavender flowers//你说习惯了lavender 的味道,不好,你这到有助于作者说了。// and may again fall into insomnia. Without ruling out such possibilities, the author’s conclusion is unconvincing.

Moreover, the arguer ignore//单三!// to mention the volunteers’ s reactions in the third week. Since volunteers feel more tired than before in the second place. 整体错误都还找出来了,不过总有些没有驳次透。
