The speaker asserts that a maximum profit should be corporate executives' single responsibility, within legal bounds. It seems true when considering the long history of economical development. However, I hold the conviction that corporate executives' responsibility should involve social responsibility and more concern about their workers under the present circumstance.
To begin with, there is no denying that to earn as much money as possible for their corporation is the primary responsibility of executives within the limits of law. In fact, it has been this case for a long time, and it will still be, for profit is the fundamental factor of a company. To pursue for the lowest cost and maximum profit, we leave ourselves to the free competition of the marketplace. The present capitalist economy and even socialist economy to some extent are functioning under this law. Some may argue that they should lower their price and make less profit for the consumers' sake. However, this is ridiculous and will exert detrimental impact on people and the society. Consider, if the price is lowered, they might lower the income of workers, who, at the same time, are consumers. And worse, to lower the cost, they may be inclined to lower the quality to compensate the profit, which is, we least want to see. Therefore, the pursuit of maximum income is not only an inevitable law but the best way for social development.
On the other hand, social responsibility is in increasing demand and indeed has its long-run benefits. The social responsibility generally includes the products' quality(say, with no potential risk to people or to the environment.), more concern about the aged and the children, and certain contribution to the society as repayment. A Korean amusement park, Kidsbear, ever struggled in a dilemma about whether they should take their theatre for commodities relative to children or for free cultural activities. For more social concern, the executive decided the latter one. As a result, they received more attention from the public and a largely growing number of kids favor their program. To their surprise, the additional revenues from those children have exceeded their investment on the cultural activity. In addition, they built a good image to the public. In fact, many companies are concerning about social aspects by the means of donation, to charities or directly for poor students.
Moreover, the concern about office workers or staff members may seem meaningless at first glance, however they should be paid more attention. The city we live in, some one said, is like a forest full of rigid dull skyscrapers and edifices without any green. People shuttle back and forth between work and family every day. Actually most of time is spent in the company. To make a living has made us work machines. If the corporate executive could invest certain amounts on the working condition or hold some meaningful activities to enrich our working life, at least as for me, I would rather choose such a humanistic executive even with a bit less income. In fact, further scrutiny reveals that by doing so staff members can improve their communication with each other; in turn help with the cooperation, which benefits the company in the long-run.
To sum up, besides the responsibility for maximum profit, corporate executives should pay additional attention to the social concerns and the working environment of his staff. Both of the factors, though at first for the moral or humanistic sake, will surely benefit the company and the whole society in the long-run.
