TOPIC:ARGUMENT 217 - The following appeared in a brochure promoting the purchase of local franchises for a national chain of gyms.
"Now is the time to invest in a Power-Lift Gym franchise so that you can profit from opening one of our gyms in your town. Consider the current trends: Power-Lift Gyms are already popular among customers in 500 locations, and national surveys indicate increasing concern with weight loss and physical fitness. Furthermore, last year's sales of books and magazines on personal health totaled more than $50 million, and purchases of home exercise equipment almost doubled. Investing now in a Power-Lift Gym franchise will guarantee a quick profit."

In this argument, the author's conclusion is that investing in a Power-Life Gym franchise will ensure a quick profit for the assumption that people will go out to join in gyms to keep health. This argument suffers from a series of logical flaws, which renders it unpersuasive as it stands.
First and foremost, there is not enough evidence provided by the author to prove out that the Power-Life Gyms can guarantee the investor earning profits. Although the Power-Life Gyms are already popular in 500 locations, it may be not popular even it has not any competition with other gyms in the other locations. Besides, even assuming that the Power-Life Gyms has some fame in other places, the national survey can not sufficiently prove out the investment is a good choices. It is possible that people living in some regions are not concerned with the weight loss and physical fitness. Thus, if people open a gym in there, the strategy of investment will be fail. Furthermore, those people, who pay more attention to weight loss and physical fitness, may not join in gym to exercise or may not keep their promise due to their work and study. Without ruling out those possibilities, the author's conclusion is dubious.
In addition, sales of books and magazines and purchases of home exercise can not represent the increasing need of gym around the country. Perhaps the reason that people buy many books and magazines on personal health is that people want to know how to keep healthy diets and orderly life. On the other hand, people spending money in purchasing home exercise equipment may not take part in gym to keep good health, because they can easily do it at home. Lacking evidence to show that advantages of gym, the author can not justifiable testify that investing gym is a good method to get profit.
Last but not least, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization that once investing in a gym, the investor will immediately gain profits. Due to that the author has not provided detailed information about the market of the gym. It is possible that there are some kinds of gyms to compete in the country. Consequently, the profit will become smaller in the future resulted from the saturated market. Meanwhile, the author neglects alternative gyms, which may be a better choice to investor for they can bring quicker profit than Power-Life Gyms. Any of those scenarios, if true, will serve to undermine the conclusion of the author.
To sum up, the argument lacks credibility because the cited evidence in this analysis can not lend strong support to what the author maintains. The author would have to demonstrate concrete and specific information to make it logically acceptable. After all, wrong prediction will bring loss rather than gains to investors. |
