TOPIC: ISSUE109 - "The purpose of many advertisements is to make consumers want to buy a product so that they will 'be like' the person in the ad. This practice is effective because it not only sells products but also helps people feel better about themselves."

Numerous ads will come into our sight after we turn on the TV. Ads can be seen everywhere in urban area, and even decorates scenery of modern cites. The contrary attitudes towards ads do exist ever since its advent.
No matter what the ads’ content is, effects of ads depend on combination of products' quality and form of ads rather than just one side.

Models and celebrities in ads may attract our attention on products, and therefore they are prone to be the reason we purchase those products. Fascinated by Kobe Bryant's excellent basketball skills, youth tend to choose NIKE rather than any other brand, especially those who are fond of basketball very much. Another example is about facial cream. Beauties in ads of facial cream attract us and make us to believe that we can have improved skin after taking same facial cream as them. It is obvious that these ads utilized buyers' admiring of those role models. It is a case of ” Love me,love my dog”. It is common to see twenties to buy something they do not really need, only to buy them for their role models.

Ads help to make profits for merchant/businessmen, but how about consumers? In the long run, it is the quality of products that make sense rather than what ads merchant use to sell products. To some extent, ads mislead us to buy something we do not need or with poor quality. After seeing the truths, we will still stop using that product. If a high school student buy NIKE shoes just for obsession of Kobe Bryant, he will probably stop buying it for heavy economic burden he has brought for his family. If a Chinese girl buy some facial cream for that famous movie star Ziyi Zhang, for example, she may finally find her skin do not adapt to that cream made for western girls. Pepsi has invested great in ads, and asked famous singers to represent their products. However, in my country, it is not as popular as orange juice from Coka Colar, since people are focus on what the drinks bring to their health.
Ads can only promote sales once, it is quality and proper benefit for us to choose that really serve as most important factors.

What merchants should do is mostly relevant to improve quality of their products, but ads are indispensable either. Competitors are all advertising their products, how can the one who sell good products to be silent? Based on development of new product incessantly, merchants should take steps on broadcasting their products and reflect consumers' opinions in their development process. An example is KFC in China, it frequently change it flavor just aim at adapting to tastes of Chinese and get success.

In sum, ads are necessary but not all for best sellers. Selling good products and combining good ads can receive better results. In contrary, keep just any side of the two will probably lose in severe competition.
