208. The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
15:21-17:04
Does the way people look, dress and act reflect their attitudes and interests? The author asserts so. In my poin of view, while there is some truth in the claim that the way people look, dress, and act reflects their attitudes and interests, it does not necessarily mean that we can judge a society's ideas and values mainly from observing the appearance and behavior of its people. For one thing, as the saying goes, semblance is often deceptive. For another, social values and ideas are something complex and comprehensive, which can not be easily told by observing.
To some extent, appearance and behavior reflect people's attitudes and interests. For instance, a typical look of Punk characterized by colorful spiked hair, tattoos covering much of their bodies and leather jackets usually sends a message to others that people nowadays are much too identical and it is being oneself that is essencial. Besides, their appearance and behavior also indicates their preference for Punk music which combines aggressive sounds of electronic instruments. However, things are not always that easy, that is to say, not all kinds of appearance and behavior provide a clear evidence of people's attitudes and interests like this.
Under some other circumstances, the way people look, dress and act is no more than an adaptation to the environment they live in. To put as an example, artists, even those who are internationally renowned, sometimes dress in a casual way with loose outer garment and render a capricious behavior due to irregular working hours. But the truth may be that they are constantly adhering to a rigid artistic criterion. This illustrates the possibility that the appearance and behavior of one may turn out to be different or even opposite to his or her real quality. In short, it is superficial to judge a person by his or her look and manner.
Appearance and behavior do not work well in aspect of a single person, let alone social values and ideas. As a concentrated expression of how the majority of social members think and what they believe, social ideas and values are abstract and general. There is no evidence to prove that, we see how to deduce and generalize people's thinking the moment we see them face to face. Therefore, it is difficult for us to effectively and accurately recognize the ideology of society as a whole. Even if we do tell something out of the appearance and behavior of its people, it is neither comprehensive nor profound.
In conclusion, the way people look, dress, and act sometimes reveals their attitudes and interests sometimes, but we can not tell much about a society's ideas and values by merely observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
