All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems.

Should all nations help support the development of a global university so as to solve the world’s most persistent social problems, as the speaker claims? I agree that the ever-increasing global problems give urgency to the need of setting a university in which students can engage in the process of solving social problems. However, the existence of global university also inevitably increases the complexity of issue and therefore should be handled with care.

To begin with, the ever-growing trends of globalization bring about various international social problems, such as environmental issues, financial interests and national security, which cannot be successfully solved within the power of a single nation. Students in traditional universities lack sufficient information and chance to learn the voices and desires from all countries, and they are not aware of the most persistent social problems in the world, since they do not know them. One advantage of the global university lies in that it offers students a precious chance to learn and practice the strategies of negotiation, cooperation and communication with students from vastly different economic and social backgrounds, which are indispensable preparation for students to deal with global social problems in the future. Besides, the global university also equips with them global eyesight to consider the world pressing social problems.

In addition, the global university can take good advantage of the international material and intellectual resources, like the global strategy adopted by many businesses. By using labor, capital and raw materials from all over the world, businesses have successfully reduced their production costs and increase their efficiency and quality. The same reasoning can be also applied to global university, which create a perfect platform for the elites and talents form all countries and allow these excellent students to learn from each other and exchange great thoughts. In global university, students can freely express disposition and opinions which represents those of their nation. It is easier for students to discuss national events in a friendly atmosphere than political figures, and thus, global university can make contribution to a harmonious world. In addition, every country can take advantage of global universities to assimilate excellent education experience from other countries in the world, which leads to tremendous improvements in the overall quality of education for all the participated countries.

While the global universities have its merits, several problems remain to be solved in order to achieve the primary goals of global universities. First of all, countries should reach agreement about the establishment of global universities and collaborate to support it. The reduction and removal of economic and political barriers should be the first step towards building global universities. Moreover, the global university in itself is the process of problem-solving, such as race discrimination, education inequity and crime. The point is that whether the global university can create an atmosphere where all cultures are respected and all viewpoints are tolerated. The impartial attitude toward students, which gives students equal rights to exhibit their position, should be the basic principle in global university.

In conclusion, I agree that the development of global university is highly recommended for the betterment of the whole world in recent world wide trend of globalization. However, we should be aware of the complexity of this issue by dealing with some obstacles in order to achieve the primary aims of global university.
