The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people
I agree with the author’s contention that the way people look, dress and act can reveal their attitude and interest, which in turn show the ideas and values of the society. However, in my opinion, this contention may be too narrow and incomplete in some aspects.
To begin with, our common sense lends credible evidence that in some situation the way people wear, look and act do reveals our attitude and interest to the world. One’s attitude and interest could be viewed as one’s opinion and understanding to the society and everything in this society, including people’s dress, look and behavior. And people will choose how to dress up, how they look like and how they express themselves by their attitude and value, in which reflect their opinion and interest to the society. For example, you can easily recognize a punk out in the crowd street by his or her tattered jeans, messed hair, cold eyes and the cigarette on the lips because these appearance tell you who they are. These punks show their opinion and value about the society, such as freedom and disobedience, to the world by their special appearance and rebellious behavior. In a word, sometimes the way people look, and act do reflect their inner attitude and interest because it is their thought that determine their look and action.
Nevertheless, people’s appearances and behaviors can not express their attitudes and interests completely and even mistakenly express people’s inner thought. On one hand, people’s dress and behavior may not be the reflection of their true perspective, but their working and life needs. If you see a man wearing business suit, walking across the street hastily in the Wall Street, you cannot just conclude that he is a work addict. Maybe what he really wants is a leisure life in the countryside with fresh air and easy job. It is their work needs which push him to wear and behave like that. On the other hand, as the old motto once says: “you can never judge a person by his or her appearance”, which means people’s inner thought cannot be expressed by their appearance, especially to some people care little about there exterior. Take Albert Einstein for example, one can never judge him as the world’s most clever man and the great physicist only by his long untidy hair and old tattered cloth. In belief, the appearance and action can not always tell people’s inner thought and attitude correctly.
When it comes to the second contention that we can tell much about the society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people, I think it should depend on a case-by-case basic. Common experience tell us the ideas and values of a society is complex and changing and it cannot be easily considered as the mixture of the values and thoughts of all signal person. In some countries and tribes which are still very unenlightened and conservative, it is true that the way people dress and behave reveals the ideas and values of the society, especially the religion belief and social hierarchy because these religion belief and hierarchy are the main power in the society and people in the society cannot disobey it in everyday’s life. In many Arabian countries, women are required to cover their face and skin with black cloth and not permitted to show a plot of skin to any man expect her husbands, which show the importance and power of religion to these people and woman’s low social class.
However, in many developed big city and countries, it is not a straightforward thing to get the ideas and values of the society by people’s look and action since the values and ideas of the society is intricate to explain. As the society developing and improving rapidly, people with different cultures communicate and exchange their ideas frequently and make the society a smelter. So many different cultures and ideas combine in a society that one cannot get the true value and ideas of the society just by observing the appearances and behaviors of people. For instance, many younglings in South Korea, Japan and China are hip-hop followers. They dress themselves up to show their characters, listen to hip-hop music and pursuit free and rebellious life. But if one
makes a conclusion about the value and ideas of Korean and Chinese by these younglings, one may make a big mistake. In fact, the value and thought of most people in China and South Korea is still very conservative, they have great respect to their parents and even choose their husbands and wives by blind date or the instruction of their parents. All of these tell us the appearance and behaviors of the people we see may mislead our understanding about the values to the society.
In sum, although sometimes the way people look, dress and act do reveals people’s attitude and interest and then in turn show the ideas and thought of the society, we should still have an deeper analysis of the thing we saw. Only in this way can we have a complete understanding about a society and the people in it.
