ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

Grounding on a survey of video-game players and what Whirlwind has introduced, the author concludes that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next months. At first glance, the evidence which is that survey is sound to convince us. But after a close scrutiny of that, we can find some critical fallacies that make the argument unpersuasive.

The author offers the survey intending to demonstrate that the result of it will ensure that the new game Whirlwind introduces will meet the needs of players and follows an increased sale. But he/she does not offer us the information of participants of the survey like age which make the conclusion of the survey unpersuasive. If all the participants of the survey are below 10 years old or beyond 25 years old, then the new games that Whirlwind introduced may not fit for them because they advertised directed at people 10 to 25 years old. Consequently, the sale may not increase. Besides the author does not mention whether the participants are representative enough to ensure the conclusion of survey itself is convincing.

Then the author tells us the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined but does not tell us the reason why this happened. It is very possible that it is not the game they introduced result to the decline but some other problems. Maybe the games they sold were too expensive for people to purchase or there was something really needed to be improved with their strategies of sales. And the author does not rule out a possibility that the video game industry is depressing. All these possibilities will make the sales declined but they are not mentioned in this argument. If the decline is due to these reasons, then no matter what game they introduce, nothing would change including the sale for sure.

To sum up, the conclusion is convincing only when the author can prove the real reason that result the decline is the game that Whirlwind introduces cannot meet the needs of players with ruling out other possibilities. Moreover, the author needs to provide more details of the survey to demonstrate that the games Whirlwind introduces will be liked by people at 10 to 25 years old. Before that, we cannot be assured that the sales of Whirlwind video game will increase and maybe it will continue declining.

最好说一下,新款游戏可能会要求较高的电脑配置,孩子就是真的想玩,也要求家长买,于是家长不给钱,电脑没有更新,这些游戏自然没有市场。个人认为纠结于年龄定位不太好,没有多大意义。
