Argument238: At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mire Vista College, 90 percent of last year’s graduating seniors had job offers from perspective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista’s graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills.
In this memo the president recommends that Mira Vista College should have more business and computer technology courses to help graduates to find job. In addition, he also advised that additional job counselors should be hired to assist to students’ resumes and interviewing skill. To substantiate his statement he cite that nearby Green Mountain College that 90 percent of last year’s graduating seniors find job after more business courses have been set up and job counselors have been hired. However, the recommendation rests on a serious of unfounded assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands. In my view, this memo suffers from several logical flaws.
Firstly, the president fails to establish the causal relationship between the fact that the considerable number of employment and that the more courses of business have opened and more counselors have been hired. However, the argument omits other alternative explanations contribute to the comparatively strong employment. It is highly possible that Green Mountain College have better and resourceful than those in Mira Vista College. Even students of these two colleges are comparable. No evidence shows that the two colleges are parallel. Perhaps Mira Vista College provided enough business courses and counselors but with poor quality of teaching. Or perhaps the overall strength of Green Mountain College is excellent and with high quality of instruction. In short, without ruling these explanations for the difference between these two colleges, the author cannot justifiably conclude the recommendation.
Secondly, the number of employment rate of these two colleges is far too vague to be meaningful. It is entirely possible that the Mira Vista College is a larger school with more students, if true, then the number of employment rate is suspicious to be convincing. if the absolute number in Mira Vista College is more large than those in Green Mountain College. The dominant position of these two colleges in number of the employment might be reversed.
Finally, the president’s recommendation relies on what might be poor analogy between Mira Vista College and Green Mountain College. The assumption is unfounded, because the author falsely depends on the assumption that the major aspects are the same. No evidence show that these two college are comparable in majors. Perhaps Mira Vista College is specialized in theology, language or literature, while Green Mountain College is expert in mathematics, computer and economics. So it is obvious that the later one should have more business courses and hire more counselors. Then, any of these scenarios, if true, would serve to undermine the claim that more business and computer and hire more counselors will help increasing the number of employment rate of Mira Vista College.
Sum up, the recommendation that is unwarranted. To make it more convincing close scrutiny of assumption that these two colleges with the same background students and parallel major. In addition, the author should indicate that the amount number of students is equivalent. Therefore, it would have been more thorough acceptable. |
