31. “Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial”.
Is money spent on research almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial? The speaker acclaims so. Undoubtedly, money used for research is a good investment, but not always. In my view, we should take the results of that research into account and make judgment on whether the research can benefit all humanity.
It is a rewarding investment to support the research financially. After all, research is an inquiry or experimentation with the purpose of the discovery and explanation of facts, revision of accepted theories or the application of new or revised theories in practice. Therefore, it can be contribute to solving the hard issues in reality and improve the quality of our lives. Here is a good example that can uphold my reason. Study on the serious diseases such as cancer is helpful to understand the cause of them so as to prevent and cure the illness, which would kill or ease the pain and extend the life expectancy. Another example is work regarding clear energy such as solar energy, wind energy and water energy. The utilization of these pollution-free energy resources plays a significant part in the protection of the environment. Obviously, people can enjoy the benefits from the above research, which clearly illustrate that money spent on research is a good investment.
However, sometimes the results of the research are controversial. There are some researches that may also produce an unexpected consequence or conflict with the conventional concepts besides of the positive influence. Study on biological and nuclear weapons is a good example. Research regarding these weapons truly makes contribution to the progress of technology but probably threatens to world peace. Embryo research has been the focus of many ethical debates in recent years. Although people can treat possibly every disease and disorder known to humans by studying human embryonic cells as well as being valuable to the advancement of new drugs, the public cannot accept it because of a religious point regarding life and how much respect an embryo should be awarded. So these researches are the subject of widespread controversy.
As a result, whether money spent on research is a good investment or not depends on what the research aims at. The study is supposed to be encouraged so long as it will contribute to improvement of society. Concerning the controversial researches mentioned ealier, we should also see that war can be controlled in a time of peace and, embryo research is restricted by morals or ethics. Moreover, these researches help greatly to promote the development of science and technology in a long term. Therefore, we need to analyze the positive and negative influences on the societies that the research possibly produces. With regard of controversial study, governments should publish a series of policies and laws to guide and limit it properly, minimize the potential harm in combination with endeavor of every individual. For example, people can provide the limited funding for the contentious research and, make them under the control of governments. So the purpose of study is crucial.
In a word, a conclusion can be drawn as the follows. On the one hand, money cost by research is considered as a wise investment when the researchers commit themselves to strive for human happiness. On the other hand, governments should play an important role in guide the research when the consequences are controversial. Only by doing so can funds allocated for the research be valuable and meaningful instead of waste. |
