TOPIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

In this argument, the speaker concludes that C Note, a jazz music club, would make great profits. To support his claim, the speaker points that the C Note would have the whole local market. Aslo, the speaker points out jazz is extremely popular in Monroe. To further buttress its conclusion, the speaker cites a nationwide study suggesting that typical jazz fan is willing to invest a lot of money on jazz entertainment. At first glance, the argument seems cogent. However, a careful examination reveals that it is fallacious in several respects.

First, the assumption that the C Note would have the whole local market is open to doubt. The fact that the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away is too weak to prove that. It is likely that the jazz fans are willing to drive to that club for its attractive music programs. Also, it is entirely possible that other clubs or places provide jazz music and have their own audience.

Secondly, the assertion that jazz is extremely popular in Monroe is dubious. First, the speaker provides little information about last summer's jazz festival, it is likely that most of its audience were visitors rather than the local residents of Monroe. Furthermore, it is likely that the reason that several celebrated musicians chose to live in Monroe is because they are little known there and can live a quiet life. In addition, there is little information about highest-rated radio program, Jazz Nightly, it is likely that most listeners are from other places.

Thirdly, the highest-rated jazz program, Jazz Nightly serves to undermine the necessity of opening a new jazz club. It is likely that people prefer listening to free radio programs to going to the jazz club.

Lastly, the national survey doesn't necessarily mean that the local citizens in Monroe are willing to go to the jazz club. The national survey is too general to apply to Monroe. Even if local citizens are willing to spend money on jazz entertainment, it doesn't mean that they would spend money on jazz club. It is likely that they prefer to spend money on CD, records, or concerts. In consequence, the speaker needs to provide evidence indicating that local people in Monroe would spend money on C Note.

In conclusion, the argument is not well-reasoned as it stands. To strengthen it, the speaker is expected to provide evidence suggesting that C Note would have the whole market. To better support it, the speaker should provide evidence that the local citizens are extremely fond of jazz music and are willing to patronize C Note.
