Are tradition and modernization are incompatible so that people must choose between them? When it comes to this issue, opinions differ from person to person. The speaker acclaims one of them must be chosen due to their incompatibility. Admittedly, there must be some differences in tradition and modernization, but not incapable of association or harmonious coexistence. Tradition established by ancestors has a deep influence on today’s life and promotes the development of present-day society, while modernization nowadays overcomes the shortcoming in tradition and supplies it effectively. As a result, the relationship between them is promotion and supplement.

Firstly, tradition, formed gradually and handed down from generation to generation, affects the present-day society deeply and enhance the development of our world today , which is accepted or customary style of thought, action or behavior including social values, believes, religious ceremonies, traditional festivals. Spring festival in china is a persuasive example. It is a very important day and has a great meaning. In spring festival, Chinese people will return home to celebrate it with all the members of the family together, no matter how far away their working places are, no matter how busy they are. This festival has strengthened the meaning of family and makes people value their families and friends, which is beneficial to improve general mood of society and relationship among people. Here is another example that can support my point. Virtue inherited by generations, such as diligence, brevity, loyalty, innovation, also have a profound influence on life and play a great role in progress of society and self-improvement. Therefore, tradition will affect our daily life and accelerate the development of the world.

Modernization overcomes the shortcoming in tradition and supplies it effectively. Modernization, in my opinion, means more advanced technologies and democratic politics, industrialized economy, higher quality of life, which is evolved from before to greater levers of development and civilization. During the evolvement, advantage of tradition has been utilized by modern people to accelerate the progress of society, in the same time, disadvantage has been got over continuously. Paper-making industry is a compelling case to illustrate this point. Paper-making has a long history. First, the principle has not been changed. Yet, in ancient time, a sheet of paper was created mainly using by
plant fibres including mulberry, and other bast fibres along with fishnets, old rags and. But today, the source of paper has been expanded and classified into three types: plant fibres, mineral fibres and metal fibres. Moreover, modern paper-making is industrialized but manual before. However, it will produce pollution of the environment so that people has developed the cleaning production of paper-making. The shortcoming of traditional paper-making was be overcame gradually during the modernization.


As a result, it is essential to take two aspects into consideration concerning this issue. First, tradition established by ancestors has a deep effect on modern life and will promote the modernization especially in area of culture and thought, as long as the positive factors of tradition are applied by people, because there are negative factors in traditional things, such as discrimination against women, racism, superstition that we are supposed to discard. Second, modernization can get over the disadvantage in tradition and supple it to advance the development of our society especially in field of economy and technology.

In a word, a conclusion can be drawn as followed. Tradition and modernization are not in compatible and one can enjoy both of them. It is necessary for people to take advantage of the positive elements in tradition to serve modernization, during the process of overcoming the shortcoming in traditional technology or mistake in thought. Only in this way can the world develop in a long term and individuals succeed in self-improvement..
