51Thefollowing appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep somepatients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis hasnow been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr.Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibioticsregularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average,40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, allbeing treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their averagerecuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients whoare diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics aspart of their treatment."

In this argument, the writer advise thatall patients with muscle strain would take antibiotics as part of theirtreatment. This suggestion is based on a study of two groups of people. For onegroup of people treated with antibiotics regularly and quickly treated.Anothergroup of patients just took sugar pills as antibiotics without knowing it andthe time of their recuperation was not significantly reduced. Thus the authorconcludes his suggestion but it obviously has some fallacies without sufficientinformation.
First of all, the studies the author citedwas conducted by two different specialists .There is no evidence to show therelated relationship between these specialists and their patients.Patientsinvolved are key points in the treatment. They could be absolutely different intheir muscle strain.Maybe patients for Dr.Newland are less suffering theillness,so their recuperation time should be shorter. And the author only recommendone of the difference in their treatment is antibiotics.Their prescriptionscould have any other differences which the author did not state but vital inthe treatment.
Even if their treatments are exactly thesame, there is no information to justify that antibiotics have nothing to dowith secondary infections. The author said that the study has primarily provedthe hypothesis that secondary infection may keep some patients from healingquickly after severe muscle strain. But the writer says nothing about whetherantibiotics can prevent secondary infections. If antibiotics cannot preventsecondary infections ,the speed of healing must still be long for somepatients.
Finaly, the author fails to ripe out otherfactors that can affect the recuperation time.As we all know, the dose alsoplays an inevitable part in recuperation. And patients’ psychologicaleffects should not be rule out, especially for the second group ofpatients. If what they take is only sugar pills but they can recover, the most effectivedrug must be their willingness and healthy psychologic reaction. They believethey can fight the illness,so they did it.
In summary, the writer omits some importantpoints and fabricates the casual link.Surely the argument and the casual linkare not fair and persuaded. To better assess the suggestion the author gives,Iwould need to know more details about the study and how the antibiotic works inthe treatment of muscle strain.More information about muscle strains andsecondary infections are needed to illustrate author’s advice.

In this argument, the writer advises that all patients with muscle strain would take antibiotics as part of theirtreatment. This suggestion is based on a study of two groups of people. For one group of people treated with antibiotics regularly and quickly treated不明白这句什么意思啊,是不是说“并且恢复的快啊”改成quickly recovered吧.Another group of patients just took sugar pills as antibiotics without knowing it and the time of their recuperation was not significantly reduced. Thus the author concludes his suggestion but it obviously has some fallacies without sufficient information.
First of all, the studies the author cited was conducted by two different specialists .There is no evidence to show therelated relationship between these specialists and their patients.(为什么戛然而止了啊,可以说下专家可能会采取其他的辅助治疗,因而会使得第一组回复的快,楼主没有在这一项展开啊)Patients involved are key points in the treatment. They could be absolutely different in their muscle strain.(是说The severity of their muscle strain could be widely different?)Maybe patients for Dr.Newland are less suffering the illness,so their recuperation time should be shorter. And the author only recommend one of the difference in their treatment is antibiotics. The only difference of the treatment between two group is bla bla~~?可是楼主很明显还有其他不同啊,主治医生就不同啊?Their prescriptions could have any other differences which the author did not state but arevital in the treatment.
Even if their treatments are exactly the sameidentical更正式,there is no information to justify that antibiotics have nothing to do with secondary infections. The author said that the study has primarily proved the hypothesis that secondary infection may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. But the writer says nothing about whether antibiotics can prevent secondary infections. If antibiotics cannot prevent secondary infections ,the speed of healing must still be long for somepatients.
Finaly, the author fails to riperule out other factors that can affect the recuperation time.As we all know, the dose also plays an inevitable part in recuperation. And patients’ psychological effects should not be ruled out, especially for the second group of patients. If what they take is only sugar pills but they can recover, the most effective drug must be their willingness and healthy psychologic reaction. They believe they can fight the illness,so they did it.
In summary, the writer omits some important points and fabricates the casual link.Surely the argument and the casual link are not fair and persuaded. To better assess the suggestion the author gives,Iwould need to know more details about the study and how the antibiotic works in the treatment of muscle strain.More information about muscle strains and secondary infections are needed to illustrate author’s advice.
https://bbs.gter.net/thread-1054303-1-1.html
