80"All students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science."
I agree with the speaker’s assertion on all students should be required to take courses in the sciences. In my point of view, there is always a connection between natural science and social science. Furthermore, taking courses in the sciences, including natural science and social science, can provide students with a complete body of systematized knowledge, which can benefits them in their area.
Admittedly, every subject connects with each other. Nowhere is more obvious than the connection between philosophy and science. The origin of science is philosophy, and in return, the scientific facts make philosophy advance. For instance, the ideas of the philosophers from ancient Greek on the movement of the earth, the son, and planets inspire the astronomers to observe the sky and found the laws of motion to the motion of heavenly bodies. In return, the scientific facts which indicate the universality of contradiction inspire the foundation of dialectics.
From the analysis above, it’s essential for students major in art and social science to study the courses of natural science. It can provide them with a complete body of systematized knowledge, which is the basis to make them a truly profound thinker or a highly creative artist. For example, Leonardo Da Vinci, “a great painter, physicist, and philosopher”, as Friedrich Engels comment, is a real, profound artist who have a great influence not only on the development of art, but also of science.
At the same time, the students who major in science also need to learn art and social science. By learning about humanity, ethic, and philosophy, they would make it more clearly the direction of the development of the science and technology. We could always hear of the stories that a technology or an invention would never take into practice because of the lack concerns about humanity and ethic. There is also some taking into practice but become a threat to human society, like the atom bomb and the biochemical weapons. On the other hand, a great scientist is always a good artist, like Einstein, a great scientist who has a great influence development of physics, is also a greater player of violin.
To sum up, no one can become a profound thinker, or a highly creative scientist without a complete body of systematized knowledge. So, don’t avoid the science courses you are not interested in, they will benefit you sooner of later.
