Women and work

We did it!
Dec 30th 2009
From The Economist print edition

The rich world’s quiet revolution: women are gradually taking over the workplace

Getty ImagesAT A time when the world is short of causes for celebration, here is a candidate: within the next few months women will cross the 50% threshold and become the majority of the American workforce. Women already make up the majority of university graduates in the OECD countries and the majority of professional workers in several rich countries, including the United States. Women run many of the world’s great companies, from PepsiCo in America to Areva in France.

Women’s economic empowerment is arguably the biggest social change of our times. Just a generation ago, women were largely confined to repetitive, menial jobs. They were routinely subjected to casual sexism and were expected to abandon their careers when they married and had children. Today they are running some of the organisations that once treated them as second-class citizens. Millions of women have been given more control over their own lives. And millions of brains have been put to more productive use. Societies that try to resist this trend—most notably the Arab countries, but also Japan and some southern European countries—will pay a heavy price in the form of wasted talent and frustrated citizens.

This revolution has been achieved with only a modicum of friction (see article). Men have, by and large, welcomed women’s invasion of the workplace. Yet even the most positive changes can be incomplete or unsatisfactory. This particular advance comes with two stings. The first is that women are still under-represented at the top of companies. Only 2% of the bosses of America’s largest companies and 5% of their peers in Britain are women. They are also paid significantly less than men on average. The second is that juggling work and child-rearing is difficult. Middle-class couples routinely complain that they have too little time for their children. But the biggest losers are poor children—particularly in places like America and Britain that have combined high levels of female participation in the labour force with a reluctance to spend public money on child care.

Dealing with the juggle
These two problems are closely related. Many women feel they have to choose between their children and their careers. Women who prosper in high-pressure companies during their 20s drop out in dramatic numbers in their 30s and then find it almost impossible to regain their earlier momentum(
推进力(运动中物体的动力);势头(非物质发展的动力)). Less-skilled women are trapped in poorly paid jobs with hand-to-mouth child-care arrangements. Motherhood, not sexism, is the issue: in America, childless women earn almost as much as men, but mothers earn significantly less. And those mothers’ relative poverty also disadvantages their children.

Demand for female brains is helping to alleviate some of these problems. Even if some of the new theories about warm-hearted women making inherently superior workers are bunk (see article), several trends favour the more educated sex, including the “war for talent” and the growing flexibility of the workplace. Law firms, consultancies and banks are rethinking their “up or out” promotion systems because they are losing so many able women. More than 90% of companies in Germany and Sweden allow flexible working. And new technology is making it easier to redesign work in all sorts of family-friendly ways.

Women have certainly performed better over the past decade than men. In the European Union women have filled 6m of the 8m new jobs created since 2000. In America three out of four people thrown out of work since the “mancession” began have been male. And the shift towards women is likely to continue: by 2011 there will be 2.6m more female than male university students in America.

The light hand of the state
All this argues, mostly, for letting the market do the work. That has not stopped calls for hefty() state intervention of the Scandinavian sort. Norway has used threats of quotas to dramatic effect. Some 40% of the legislators there are women. All the Scandinavian countries provide plenty of state-financed nurseries. They have the highest levels of female employment in the world and far fewer of the social problems that plague Britain and America. Surely, comes the argument, there is a way to speed up the revolution—and improve the tough lives of many working women and their children?

If that means massive intervention, in the shape of affirmative-action programmes and across-the-board benefits for parents of all sorts, the answer is no. To begin with, promoting people on the basis of their sex is illiberal and unfair, and stigmatises(
be stigmatized:to be treated by society as if you should feel ashamed of your situation or behaviour) its beneficiaries. And there are practical problems. Lengthy periods of paid maternity leave can put firms off hiring women, which helps explain why most Swedish women work in the public sector and Sweden has a lower proportion of women in management than America does.

But there are plenty of cheaper, subtler ways in which governments can make life easier for women. Welfare states were designed when most women stayed at home. They need to change the way they operate. German schools, for instance, close at midday. American schools shut down for two months in the summer. These things can be changed without huge cost. Some popular American charter schools now offer longer school days and shorter summer holidays. And, without going to Scandinavian lengths, America could invest more in its children: it spends a lower share of its GDP on public child-care than almost any other rich country, and is the only rich country that refuses to provide mothers with paid maternity leave. Barack Obama needs to measure up to his campaign rhetoric about “real family values”.

Still, these nagging problems should not overshadow the dramatic progress that women have made in recent decades. During the second world war, when America’s menfolk were off at the front, the government had to summon up the image of Rosie the Riveter, with her flexed muscle and “We Can Do It” slogan, to encourage women into the workforce. Today women are marching into the workplace in ever larger numbers and taking a sledgehammer to the remaining glass ceilings.

Comment:
Women has been taken as second-grade citizen since long ago either in the eastern or western. It is a huge progress for women to come out of the houses and go into the workplace. As I say, it is not easy at all to fight for the rights women should share with men. Forturnly (fortunely)(fortunately), we see a glance of light. Yet, it is still hard for woman is the one who concive with baby for ten month, for who does the housework, who brings children to school. It seems that taking care of the children’s daily life is a job only of women’s. That’s the problem when they are going to work. And the ture is women can do almost men can do and even better, though men can’t. that requires the embrace for women’s difficulties.
Surviving in the world is not easy for a man not even mention a woman. How to deal with the work and life become a meaningful question, that is how to cope with the career and family, a dilpmna (dilemna) situation, too. If the society would like to keep this trend, it has to figure out a way for women to live comfortable with it, at least a little bit more comfortalbe. Don't ignore women because they are 30 and soon to have babies then have to ask leave for a while.

I have been thinking this question for a while, why the American education abandon the chance of teaching religions? And why the power of Christian theory is so huge that every one seems ready for fighting for god who can not be deified? And these words suddenly enlighten me “to teach about religion, but not to teach religion itself

My understanding is that, there is possible to let the students to know something about the religions but try to tell them how great it is and not trend to persuade them to believe in one religion only.

One of my friends is Muslim. When I knew that at first, I was a little scared so as to talk much about his belief. He told me, I should refer more about the religions to explore my soul as possible as I could. He did not told me something like, you should believe in Muslim too because it is the only god in the world and the truest one. At that moment, I appreciated him very much.

When I read this article, I remind of him. And I thought it would be the right thing to make the point of teaching religions and do it. People have their own choices. Teachers should give the students’ to themselves however.

Interesting issue here actually. When arts meet financial crisis, they became weaker for showing their charming performance. We can conclunde that it seems like all about money. Yes, running a organization with little money is not a easy stuff. But the necessity of providing bailouts is concerned. It also mention that the status of NEA, and the influence.

According to the author, he thinks that the NEA is superfluous that does need to exist any more. In my eyes, it is like a connection, which can make work better, that is needed.

comment写得很差!!

There was a man told me, as all we’ve known that, brain was an amazing place which we never know what we can find from it. We can explore it with the help of high-tech, like we learn from this article, as we know about the current exploration by optogenetics, which has the ability to alter animal behavior and might replace deep-brain stimulation eventually.
The experiments and remarks both come the words said Deisseroth. It is a path science will move on not only a general direction. Can we say now is a predictior of the future this time? I am wondering about that…

READING:

Electromagnetic manufacturing
It's a knockoutEngineers find a new way to punch holes through steel
Jan 14th 2010
From The Economist print edition

ELECTROMAGNETIC pulses (EMPs) (电磁脉冲) are usually associated with warfare. The idea is to use a blast of energy to fry the enemy’s computers and telecommunications gear. One common way proposed to do this is with anatomic bomb. In a less extreme fashion, however, EMPs have peaceful uses. They are already employed industrially to shape soft and light metals, such as aluminium and copper. Now a group of researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology in Chemnitz, Germany, has found a way to use an EMP device to shape and punch holes through industry’s metallic heavy weight—steel. This could transform manufacturing by doing away with (to put an end to : ABOLISH) the need to use large, heavy presses to make goods ranging from cars to washing machines.
Verena Kräusel and her colleagues performed their trick by
beefing up (
to improve something or make it more interesting, more important etc) an existing electromagnetic-forming machine. Such machines use abank of capacitors to discharge a current rapidly through a coil. The coil converts the current into a powerful magnetic field. When the component to be worked is placed next to such a machine, the coil induces in it a corresponding field. Like poles repel, and the repulsion (n 厌恶;排斥力) between the two fields is strong enough to make the metal distort.
    Dr Kräusel and her colleagues
boosted the power of their machine by strengthening its coil and speeding up the rate at which the capacitors dump their charge. The result is an extremely strong field—one that delivers enough pressure when it hits the steel to punch out the material next to it, leaving a hole behind. The impact pressure on the steel is about 3,500 atmospheres. That is the weight of three small cars pressing on an area only a centimetre or so square.
The result is that the machine is able to
punch holes 30mm indiameter through the type of sheet steel used to build car bodies, which is usually around 1mm thick. The group have also used their machine to punch holes in hardened steel, including stainless steel. And, besides punching holes in steel, such a machine could also be used to form shapes out of the metal without the need to use a mould or a die.
Firms such as Germany’s giant carmaker Volkswagen are sponsoring the project because forming steel components with an EMP device provides a number of advantages. Although using a heavy press to bend metal and cut holes in it is fast, the tearing action at the edges of the holes leaves ragged, sharp tailings, known as burrs. This means that parts stamped out this way
have to be cleaned up, usually by hand, which increases production costs. The need to keep replacing the stamps and dies used by the press, as they become blunt, also adds to the expense.
    Lasers (
激光) are one alternative. They can cut cleaner holes in steel, but they are slower than stamping because they need to burn their way around the part. They are also expensive to operate. An electromagnetic punch, however, stamps its hole without tearing the metal, which means no burrs are left behind, and it never gets blunt. In fact, says DrKräusel, her machine can punch a hole clean through a sheet of steel in a fifth of second—compared with the 1.4 seconds needed by a laser.
The team members are now carrying out further development work on the coil. They expect factories to take up the idea quickly, because
it is a modification of equipment that is already familiar. The size of holes that can be cut depends on the size of the coil, so specific coils will be needed for each application. Specific punches, however, are needed for traditional presses, so this would not seem to be a deterrent (
妨碍物体)—especially as an EMP device should be able to deliver consistently accurate blows without wearing itself out. A hole, new technology, as it were.

Comment:
It is an intranduction of EMPs, that is electromagnetic pluses, which are used in warfare but could be associated with the industries now. Electromagnetic-forming machine could sharp forms without the need to use a mould or a die, punch holes through the heavy-weight metal, which are thicker than normal, and tear the metal without burrs left and never gets blunts. The team members who are carrying out on this divice (device) tell us that it is just a modification of gear which we have been familiar with.
It connects with the cost. The industries should have concerned about the price they would like to pay then decide it, even they have better effects. As the saying in the end of the article, an EMPs device should be able to deliver consistently accurate blows without wearing itself out. Lower cost, higher benefits.

The paradoxes, which we always put our attention to discuss about the absolute freedom, actually exist in the universe. When we are talking about the freedom in a nation charged by the government, we do understand it has to put an line, and no one is allowed to across that line. so there is no aboslute free. same as the laws. laws can contrain us in a lot of areas but still can't cover all. sometimes we need to keep on the morality above
the laws.

Focusing on personal development during our whole life living with others, such families, friends and strangers that sometimes make us abolish our rules to conform to the tradition or custom.
Hiding parts of our personality is a necessary way to keep good connection with other since we are social species that can live all alone.

But if the rule is not modified in some ways, where is the individual from? being different may be a big chellange and hard goal to achieve especially when peopele around are comfortable about the current situation and ready to assail people who make a difference. how successful you are may depent on how dare you are. when we finially decide to ignore the opposites, that will be our first step to change, which is significant.

Banks play a unreplacable role in the finacial industries, which has been bailed out throughout the history even people hate it. The blanket guarantee has changed to allow the lenders to borrow cheaply and is unfair nowadays. That makes the taxpayer lend so much money that they don't even have the ability to pay back. That’s a start of bankrupcy. Low cost of borrowing money from banks require banks to recoup the subsidies. Given the supports from the government, the banks needs to adjust the capital liquidity. Since the economic is the society’s most connection, it has to be put in the first place.

This is really interesting debate, I have to say that, when a man and a woman are arguing about what the current situation for women is good enough or not. It seems a little ironic that men still standing aside say that you women have been much better than before and that is not fair to tell your unfairs. On the other hand, women are the ones who still hard working on gaining their rights which should be shared with men as they thought (I could be the third gender now even I am a female ).

What Mr. Donkin’s opinion is that, we women have archieved (achieved) a lot in the past generation that we are going on a good life with fair educational opportunities and workplace, even in the political world. As I see, those are based on comparing to our mothers , who live in hudreds years ago, servicing husbands and families as their only meaning of lifes. That seems make sense but it takes us to another direction while we are talking about women’s rights that should be differed from men, who always control the world even now, as Ms O'Neill’s saying, Mr. Donkin is trying to argue that women never had it so good. My understanding of Mr. Donkin’s remarks is that he is trying to tell us just to focus on women’s progress when women have been much better off than decades ago, not comparing to men. My question is that if men are created equal, why women should not require the fundamental rights as men have had at the beginning of humanity instead of being happy for the tiny improvement earned after their mothers.

So far, I have to talk as my female identity, that Ms. O'Neill’s argument is absolutely harsh but true enough while thinking about her perspective. I might say it’s a good shot but do not forget that this debate constrains the motion of “women”at developed countries. How about the rest of the world? I don't think we can ignore that while we discuss about this issue.

我们是休眠中的火山,是冬眠的眼镜蛇,或者说,是一颗定时炸弹,等待自己的最好时机。也许这个最好的时机还没有到来,所以只好继续等待着。在此之前,万万不可把自己看轻了。
