TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

From the ancient eastern education ideology of the teacher and apprentice dated back to Confucius to the modern western high education characterized by mentorship system, history has witnessed the success of education accord to individual needs. Just imagine how many great students of Confucius are admired by the people of the ensuing millenniums, and how tremendous contribution are the scholars graduated from western universities to the development of the past two hundred years. However, overreached specific education is expensive, unwise and actually unnecessary.

To begin with, the western graduate school constructed on the basis of one mentor with several degree candidates has cultivated most of the science and technology elites of this era. It is the essence of specifically designed education that makes any great achievements possible. To choose to go to graduate school, as is often the case, is out of the individual interests. And the mentorship system could meet the individual needs by the mentor constructing in how to develop a project the students want to conduct, as well as how to succed. Actually, the success of modernization is due to the effective of graduate education; and the success of modern graduate education attributes greatly to the specifically designed education to individuals. So it is with the ancient civilization of China and its education system of teacher and apprentice.

Were the education to be homogeneous to every student despite of their individual needs and interests, the world would be vapid and the education itself is a failure. Is a world full of scientists or engineers, but no literati, no artists, a good one? Definitely not. In addition, creativity will also extinct with the elimination of individual interests as we have nothing different. Even to cultivate speicalists of one specific field like art successfully should not just teach them in the same way, as every artist has his own  distinct personality, and only by unearth the inmost interests can an artist succeed, as well as the education system itself.

Overemphasis of specifically designed education as to apply it to every feild and every level of education , however, I believe is naive. Take elementary education for example, while I admit that creativity should be encouraged in elementary education, I don't think it is wise to develop a system like the graduate school. As to this matter, there's much more students to attend elementary school than graduate school, how can we afford to allocate every few students a teacher? As a matter of fact, what most pupils need is just a basic education that is not much different from others, best on which they can finally decide what is to their most interest. The same argument applies for basic technology education, where what the students need is how to use the technology to make a living rather than to work out a new and more efficient technique.

In sum, the success of education can only be reached by specifically designing it to meet individual needs and interests. Nevertheless, it is unwise to reach every kind of education. What makes the education truly effective is a thorough understanding of where to apply this specific education.
