11.15---ARGUMENT143

Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time.
*Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the number of their employees.

outline:
1.a recent report---报告的有效性?
2.many of those who lost their jobs...---什么叫many?
5. vast majority of these jobs are full-time.具有两面性,full-time如果不满意就没有时间做第二份工作了

In the article the writer disagree with the reader on the viewpoint of corporate downsizing according to a recent report on the United States economy. It seems that the points in the report are convictive and the conclusion the writer made is correct. However, there is still something ignored in the analyzing process. It is hasty to obtain such a conclusion according to the report like this. I will expatiate it in four steps below.

To begin with, neither the name of the report nor the people or association who investigated the problem was mentioned in this article. What's more, the report referred that "many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment" without telling readers how large the sample of people under investigation was. Here comes a doubt of the reliability of the report. How could the conclusion be made without reliability?

Even if the report was reliable, it didn't give readers a clear picture of the economy. It said that two thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages. So how about the one third left? The report didn't mention it. The readers could not know what exactly the jobs are, how much do these peoples be paid and how the people feel about their new jobs.

The report is also supposed to divide the people into groups according to regions, ages and gender. Firstly, we all know that different places come with different economy development levels. In different regions, an average wage of a country doesn’t mean a good life; meanwhile, a below-average wage may lead to a relatively better one. Secondly, most of women and the old may not be suit for industrial jobs. That is to say, probably a large number of them would have below-average wages. Therefore, without a more accurate division, the figures in the report couldn't be very valuable.

Moreover, it is said that the vast majority of these jobs are full-time in the report. This may lead to other more serious problems. Suppose that a person find a job difficultly which is full-time but low paid. With no time left he isn't able to have another job. Or rather there is no chance to hunt another job at all because of depression of economy. The only thing he can do is to maintain this poor work and face a serious economic hardship.

In all, the conclusion of the article that since 1992 workers who lost their jobs could find new employment looks reasonable from the report. But it may lack of rational inference. Although we are not able to believe that the economy is still weak, we can not achieve the point in this article.
