When we go to different countries, to experience various cultures, we realize that not all the people can speak English, Spanish or Chinese, because language is a diversified topic and we will never know that how many kinds of languages on this planet. However, as the earth becomes a global planet, human's migration and other reasons, lots of languages are disappearing. Should the governments take measures to stop this trend?
Languages, are not just the means of communication, they are the vehicles of education, as well as the exact measure to document the human history. Ever since thousands of years ago, the ancient people had their own languages. For instance, I am a minority in my country, our people have been speaking our own language for almost three thousands years. Regrettably, as the development of the society, advancement of technology, most countries have defined their official language. As a consequence, news, television programs and other information are transmitted by the official language, and the languages of the minority groups have eliminated gradually.
The regional languages and some dialects precisely record and represent the culture, history and the essence of those people. As Mandarin to Chinese, regional languages to the minorities therefore, it has been debated by a long period of time whether those lesser-known languages should be protected. And there are already some organizations, institutes and groups try to preserve and record the sources of various languages. Meanwhile, if governments invest more money, energy and time on this task, this will definitely actuate the protection of diverse culture and human history.
It is an undeniable fact that the protection of different lesser-known languages will be more efficient as well as meaningful, especially with the great assistance of the governments. But the problem here is can this action prevent the extinction of the regional languages?
Languages have been evolving as human beings. When people notice that a new language will bring them more advantages, most of them will try to handle the new languages and pursue a better life. As a consequence, the old language will be eliminated. Just like some professors from my university predicted that in the near future English and Chinese will be the most popular language on this planet, because people will be strongly influenced by the power of these two languages. Obviously, people prefer to adapt the new environment when they have no choice.
In addition, no matter what kind of effort has been made, it seems impossible to stop the trend of language extinction. When we look the past, the technology was limited, people's lives were simple and their visions were narrowed. They had to use the regional languages to communicate their groups of people rather than have a multi-national meeting. In contrast, today, humans can just take several hours fly to different continents for traveling and business; sit in front of a computer can witness what is happening in the rest of the world. Consequently, the earth is becoming a melting pot, we gradually get started to share the similar culture, idea and thinking. All this is about language since most people are eager to absorb the outside information; meanwhile, the trend of language extinction is quietly disappearing.
It seem that prevent the lesser known language can be impossible, but the governments' supports and effective measures will definitely assist the documentation and preservation of indigenous languages. |
