第一篇。。。

The author of this argument intends to make readers believe that workers who lose their jobs as a result of downsizing don't have to face serious economic hardship. To support his claim, the author cites a recent report on the United States economy to demonstrate now there are actually more work opportunities most of which have a good salary for the jobless. It seems reasonable at first glance, but close scrutiny reveals that it contains some logical flaws.

First, the author emphasize there are more jobs have been created; however, the increasing sum of new jobs doesn't tell us the truth without considering the sum of people who are hunting for jobs. We have reasons to believe that, in United States, the population may grow as fast as the nation's economy, thus creating more job hunters. Even the sum of the jobs is rising, though the opportunities for each people can become less.

Second, it may be true that many downsized workers have found new employment. Yet, when it comes to a large sample, like the population of a nation, many of it may still be a small portion. To make his claim more persuasive the author should offer accurate statistics about the portion of those who have found new jobs in the total people who lost their jobs and more details, like the salary, full-time or part-time, about the jobs they found.

Third, because two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, the author tends to consider that those who lost their jobs will live a better life with these jobs. But this conclusion is based on the assumption that those people finally get the job. As we all know, more wage a job offers, more people will compete for it. We can draw the conclusion reasonably that the people who lost their job as a result of downsizing are less competitive than their colleagues who keep their jobs, thus they may lose again in the fight for a new job.

In sum, the author's claim is not well supported. To convince me that those who lost their jobs can find jobs quickly and keep their former living condition, the author must provide more detail information about how many people have found new jobs and how many of them stay unemployed, how long it takes to find a new job on average and if the salary of the new job can guarantee a comparably comfortable life.
