The professor made the point that the declination of literature had negative effects on our society. The reading, on the contrary, demonstrated a conflicting standpoint.

First of all, the lecture contradicts the idea that the decrease of reading literature will lead to declining of the society’s ability to think as a whole. Although literature provides many good books to speak to the mind and emotions, there are numerous good books, like science fictions, to stir people’s imagination and creativity. Many alternative ways can be found to help to increasing people’s overall ability to think as a whole rather than make it wither.

Second, according to the lecture, the dropping of literature’s reading does not necessarily causes the culture level to decline. Contrary to the statement in the passage, the electrical media, such as the cinema, TV and digital record, can expand our mind and make the diversity blooms.

Finally, indeed it is a problem that the English literature becomes increasingly marginal. However, it is not the fault of the readers, but the writers. The writers fail to write something understandable and attractive to readers. That’s why more and more readers today refuse to reader literatures any more. In a word, although it is true that the number of people reading literature is decreasing, it does not mean this tendency has bad effects on our society.
