207 Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
Wearing white panorobe, holding the groom’s arm, and walking into the holy church may be dream of many girls. This scene is very common in west world, and of course helps define their culture. But are such kinds of rituals or ceremonies the only channels to reflect the tradition? The answer may be “no”.
Firstly, the native art is useful to distinguish different culture. Since our ancestors lived in various locations where there might have different climate and environment, the ways they perceived and explained the world will be different accordingly. This difference surely reflected in there art works. For example, in China, people think that all things have their own spirits, so the main task of an artist is to express these spirits. If we have the chance to see the traditional Chinese painting, we can find that although in these paintings the objects is often not just like the origins of our lives, they look much lively. On the contrary, the traditional oil paintings in west world emphasize to be loyal to the original object, so such paintings are more similar than Chinese paintings. This may due to the straightforward characters in their culture. Just because of this, many historians were often attracted by the discovery in art field.
Secondly, books and documents are another way to help define a culture. Actually, although many rituals and ceremonies are preserved today, there are still some of them had been forgotten. Through books and documents, people not only can known the relationship between current rituals and culture, but also may discover some aspects which may have been neglected. From certain perspective, this channel is a more reliable and complete way to define a culture. Especially for those socialists, if they solely depend on rituals and ceremonies, they may lose abundant valuable resource.
Admittedly, rituals and ceremonies are useful for societies of people to diminish themselves. After all, they were formulated by our ancestor and preserved from generation to another. Some of them have been inalienable parts of our lives. For example, when we get to marry, we think of wedding; when it comes to the weekend, we think of religious service. They are our everyday lives, and they of course help to define our culture.
In sum, although rituals and ceremonies play important roles in societies, they are not the only way to get into a culture. So it is unreasonable to regard them as the whole of a culture.
