The lecture is mainly discussing the three points to complain that the log firms would like to employ environmental protection technology. By challenging what is stated in the reading passages that wood companies would reluctant to adopt the environmental friendly technology in their products, in order to gain “ecocertified”, the professor listing contradictory reasons to the reading.
First, the reading says that American consumers would not choose ecocertification products for there were many advertisement to put great variety and diversity labels on the products, which made them not to believe the advertisement easily. The professor refute that consumers would not with no discrimination in treating every advertisement. They trust the advertisement made by the independent certification organizations. So they would like to buy the products which certificated by theenvironmental organization.
Second, the reading says the that the ecocertified products would more expensive than the common products that would make people not to choose them. In the lecture, the professor concede that people do pay attention to the price, but only the price of the products are much higher than others, the consumers would not to buy them. The price of the ecocertified products only higher no more than 5% than other products, that would not the decisive factor. Because more and more people come into realized the important of the environmental protection.
Finally, the reading says because the major market share of American wood firms were in domestic, they would not mind to be ecocertified to cater to the abroad consumers who was like environmental friendly products.But professor pointed out, that the American companies always pay attention to the trend of the world market, because of they were afraid of the foreign competitor. If they do not have ecocertified products, they would lost the market share to the foreign firms who adopt the environmental protection technology.
