TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
WORDS: 584
TIME: 00:45:00
DATE: 2009-12-17 jason 16:42:20

The study of history is part and parcel regardless of how much progresses we have made and how many more options come along with those progresses. To understand the past enables us to be better prepared for the new challenges arising from the progresses and dilemmas that stem from competing options we have.

History is primarily a study of human and social behavior. The development of the society is a constantly upward spiral, historically interconnected. Lessons learnt yesterday guide the handling of challenges in a new and complex today. The significant strides we have made in nearly every realm of social development has some byproducts that we do not expect in the first place. Puzzled by the uncertainty of the future, we need to solve these unwanted byproducts by referring to the past. Though these problems are newly appeared that we would never be confronted before, they could be better understood by comparing to a similar problem in history and the strategy and principle of solving them could be learnt in the study of this history. We will have no clue of how to understand and solve the threat of spreading nuclear weapon unless we look up in the history of arms race during and after world wars. It is the imbalance between developments of different nations: those superpowers build a stronger national defense, which other countries perceive as potential threat to their sovereignty and thus pour their limited government funds into creating new weapons. Noticed that drastic increase in military spending, those superpowers feel threatened and expand their defense system further. Be it the nuclear weapon today or missiles after World War II, arms race reflects the development gap between countries and an absence of
trust in the international community. Bearing this historic lesson in mind, the international community primarily counts on negotiation and communication to solve this nascent problem, building up a peaceful global community. Understanding of the past instructs us in solving current problems, helping pave the path leading to a better future.

In the hope of building up a better future, we use history as a predictor and compass in the darkness of multiple challenges we face today. When we finally choose a path and embark on one, we, as a people, will confront dilemmas and hard choices in this changing world. Ethical dilemma repeats itself throughout the study of history, a study not only of certifiable heroes who successfully worked through it but also of ordinary men and women who provide lessons in diligence courage and sacrifice. It is not only those heroic leaders who try to lead will weather adversity. People living in obscurity are imposed to make ostensible choices in their daily lives. Understanding the history of individuals and situations in the past allow us to test our own moral sense, to hone it against same o the real complexities individuals have to face in this new and complex world.

For an individual who wants to flourish in this new and complex society, an understanding of past provide guidance for universal and timeless humanity questions that we all share. Equipped with this guidance, we would move further towards a better future with a trained trait of being reflective, an ability that is exceedingly crucial in a future destined to be more complex.

History is primarily a study of human and social behavior. (首句与后文的联系似不是那么紧密)The development of the society is a constantly upward spiral, historically interconnected. Lessons learnt yesterday guide the handling of challenges in a new and complex today. The significant strides we have made in nearly every realm of social development has some byproducts that we do not expect in the first place. Puzzled by the uncertainty of the future, we need to solve these unwanted byproducts by referring to the past.(上下这两句内容很类似。 Though these problems are newly appeared that we would never be confronted before, they could be better understood by comparing to a similar problem in history and the strategy and principle of solving them could be learnt in the study of this history. We will have no clue of how to understand and solve the threat of spreading nuclear weapon unless we look up in the history of arms race during and after world wars. It is the imbalance between developments(下文似乎更强调misconception) of different nations: those superpowers build a stronger national defense, which other countries perceive as potential threat to their sovereignty and thus pour their limited government funds into creating new weapons. Noticed that drastic increase in military spending, those superpowers feel threatened and expand their defense system further. Be it the nuclear weapon today or missiles after World War II, arms race reflects the development gap between countries and an absence of trust in the international community. Understanding of the past instructs us in solving current problems, helping pave the path leading to a better future.

In the hope of building up a better future, we use history as a predictor and compass in the darkness of multiple challenges we face today. When we finally choose a path and embark on one, we, as a people(一个民族?), will confront dilemmas and hard choices in this changing world. Ethical dilemma repeats itself throughout the study of history, a study not only of certifiable heroes who successfully worked through it but also of ordinary men and women who provide lessons in diligence, courage and sacrifice. It is not only those heroic leaders who try to lead will weather adversity. People living in obscurity are imposed to make ostensible(1 : intended for display  : open to view 2 : being such in appearance  : plausible rather than demonstrably true or real  *the ostensible purpose for the trip*)choices in their daily lives(这句话不是很理解). Understanding the history of individuals and situations in the past allow us to test our own moral sense, to hone it against same of the real complexities individuals have to face in this new and complex world.

私以为这段有些beating about the bush。

For an individual who wants to flourish in this new and complex society, an understanding of past provide guidance for universal and timeless humanity questions that we all share. Equipped with this guidance, we would move further towards a better future with a trained trait of being reflective, an ability that is exceedingly crucial in a future destined to be more complex.

全文:T(学习历史有助于更好地面对现代社会的挑战)——>B1(研究历史能帮忙解决当前问题)——>B2(历史能够作为当今挑战与困境中的predictor and compass)——>结论
