In this era of rapid social and technological changing leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, many of us think that the past can tell us less about how to do right now and what we should do is just catch up with every minute today. However, this idea is very short-sighted and will lead to a big problem.

It seems that without the memory of the past we can still deal with the challenges coming to us properly. Life is so complex today so that we focus all our attention on what has happened right now, what’s more, we should learn many new things nearly every day. Under these situations, we have lost the placid heart to read the past, and thus we will learn nothing from it.

The root cause behind this social phenomenon can be traced back to the long-held belief that “time is money”; Featured by the fast pace of our contemporary society, there is literally no chance for people to take a closer look at the history. Employers have to deal with a pile of problems everyday; deciders have to make choices among complex situations in limited time. Quick decisions are demanded. No wonder the study of history will seems to be useless.


However, although trying one’s best to deal with daily problem is a good way to ease pressure, the study of the past will give us a functional solution in a long run. Actually, Many problems we face today began with small mistakes long ago, if we do not come back to find the key problem, we will not solve it. And on the other hand, there are many lessons hidden in the past mistakes, only by studying the past, will we grow from those miserable experiences. For example, Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve ,who has been a leading scholar of the Great Depress, has successfully avoid the mistakes Federal Reserve had make after the great depression, TIME noted that “His creative leadership helped ensure that 2009 was a period of weak recovery rather than catastrophic depression”. As we can see, without the study of history, we may make the same mistake when facing the same problem.

Not only the study of the past can tell us the truth of the past and give the solution for the faced challenges, it can also give us the true meaning of life. History is an elder who keep telling many interesting stories about humanity to hone the sense of pride, dignity and self-worth while promoting the thoughts about values, humanity and morality. In my opinion, the genuine purpose of study on history is rooted not in reconstructing the past completely and accurately by the mere sifting of evidence for facts but rather delivering the eternal values and humanity which can illustrate the present as a light and bend the arc of future toward the hope of a better day. So when we open up a history book, it is a journey to go to a house located in the city of human civilization.

To conclude, though the problems we have faced are complex than ever before, the emphasizing of the past is still needed. Without the study of the past, we will not truly understand the reality and take a wrong path to the future.

其实2、3两段是我想让步，先解释目前的生活似乎不需要历史，以及这种现象的真正原因是什么（其实是想剖析给出的论点产生的原因，但是表达效果很差啊，呵呵呵）；接着再转过来，论述历史其实是需要的；
