The author asserts that every individual has a responsibility to obey just laws. He also contends that it is more important for every individual to disobey and resist unjust laws. I agree with the author's assertion to some extent that every individual should obey just laws. However, is it important for every individual to disobey and resist unjust laws? I doubt about this assertion.
First as a member of the society, it is every individual's responsibility to obey the laws, not only the just laws. Actually whether the law is just or unjust does not depend on every individual's judge. Government issues a law according to the majority people's benefits and needs, also the law meets the most essential and emergency problems which are supposed to be solved immediately. So it is possible that there are some people who are not satisfied with some just laws. However, considering more about public's benefits, it is essential for every individual to obey the just laws.
Secondly if the law is unjust, every individual can have his or her different ideas. However, every individual should not take some individual actions to resist the unjust laws. It is not every individual's duty to take actions to the unjust laws. Some government bureaus which are in charge of different laws should take some actions to adjust the law to the public's needs. So it is proper for every individual to change unjust laws through legal process.
For instance, Martin Luther King protects the black's profits by some legal ways and he provides a candle along with a light. On December 10, 1964, Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. So we should know that if we disobey and resist "unjust laws", we may bring in Beatings, imprisonment and sometimes death. If we take legal process, we can reach our goals safely and legally.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that it is essential for every individual to obey the just laws. As for unjust laws, we should be patient and take some proper actions after considering.
题目:ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In the argument, the arguer concludes that Professor Thomas should receive a $1,0000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson on the assumptions that her classes are among the largest at the university and the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. In addition, the arguer contends that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University(ECU) if she does not get a raise and promotion. However, the assertion is based on several fallacies.
First of all, the arguer fails to give more evidences about the reasons why Professor Thomas's classes are among the largest ones in the university. The arguer only referred that this demonstrates her popularity among students. However, perhaps it is such an easy subject to get good marks which Professor Thomas teaches that so many students study it instead of her popularities.
Secondly, it is not persuasive for the arguer to draw the conclusion that she has outstanding research abilities just considering the money she has brought to the university in research grants. There are lots of other alternatives to think about her research abilities. Maybe there are someone else who are in the same research group and work with Professor Thomas.
Then the arguer assumes that Professor Thomas will leave ECU if she does not receive such a raise and promotion. This assumption really seems unreasonable. There is no evidence which can gurantee that she will not leave ECU if she gets a raise and promotion. Maybe she will choose another school if ECU does not provide the proper and enough research requirements. Or perhaps she want to have a raise of more than $1,0000.
To sum, the argument fails to give efficient evidences to assure me that Professor Thomas is a teacher who has outstanding techind and reseach abilities. And the arguer should assure me that she is an outstanding professor who deserves a raise and promotion. Meanwhile, the arguer should give the evidence that Professor Thomas will not leave ECU if she gets a raise and promotion. |
