ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

The society always has too much to offer and at the same time too many requests from the scholars and researchers. The ability to strike a balance between individual interests and contributions is crucial to all scholars and researchers who want to have a successful academic career.

Individual interests direct scholars and researchers when they decide which field they want to explore given the overwhelming options in the academic world. One major discipline is divided into many sub-disciplines and each sub-discipline embraces multiple research focus. In the world of education, for example, sub-disciplines include comparative education, education psychology, and sociology of education and so on. Confronted with choices, a scholar or research has to decide which sub-discipline they are interested in. One who is fascinated about how students reacted psychologically to the teacher in class might choose education psychology as their specific area. Individual interest sometimes could be unusual or even idiosyncratic. But they could drive the scholars and researches to persistently move forward in their own field. These queer or unique interests of them, if consistently pursued, could lead to unexpected success. Sigmond Freud, for example, created his own theory about how sex drive in human nature contributes to psychology development, which can be attributed to his unique obsession with studying dreams.

Without a strong personal commitment stems from individual interests, scholars and researchers are more likely to enter an academic field that does not enchant them and lost their motivation. Noble work of pursuing truth will become mundane routine in the laboratory in office, in which case significant contribution seldom is generated.

Individual interests, important as it is, can narrow possibilities in academic world and cause psychological or emotional displacement if scholars and researches turn a deaf ear to the request from larger society. On the one hand, a narrow focus in their individual interests could block them from other research opportunities that may also interest them. A scholar has to keep up with the changing demands and trend in academic world if he wants to make the best out of his individual interest. Overlooking the requests and needs in the society could undermine the potential in his research by limiting its scope of application. A scholar of education psychology, for example, could not produce excellent papers in international academic journals unless applicable solution to classroom management or children development is explored at least touched upon in their researches. On the other hand, an extreme obsession with one’s individual interest in their academic career could to the detriment of their personal life, which could lead to emotional displacement. They devoted all their times and attention to their interests so that they alienated friends and families, which ultimately can lead to a careless and apathetic scholar. These scholars could be exceedingly vulnerable for any minor mistake or failure they made in their research could be devastating to them. So a sense of balance between individual interests and society requests is important to enable scholars and researchers see the potential in their works and stay in healthy psychologically.

As presented in our analysis, neither individual interests nor contribution to the larger society can be neglected if scholars and researchers want to navigate their academic gear, which individual interests acted as an engine and contribution to the larger society is the road outside the window that the driver has to keep an eye on.

==================

The society always has too much to offer and at the same time too many requests from the scholars and researchers. The ability to strike a balance between individual interests and contributions is crucial to all scholars and researchers who want to have a successful academic career

Individual interests direct scholars and researchers when they decide which field they want to explore given the overwhelming( M-W: tending or serving to overwhelm  *overwhelming force*;  also   : EXTREME, GREAT  *overwhelming indifference*  *an overwhelming majority。若指选择很多的话,似用numerous之类更佳) options in the academic world.
本段指出个人兴趣促使研究者选择领域,且兴趣让研究者persistent以成功,例子分别是教育领域和弗洛伊德。

Without a strong personal commitment stems from individual interests, scholars and researchers are more likely to enter an academic field that does not enchant them and lost their motivation. Noble work of pursuing truth will become mundane routine in the laboratory in office, in which case significant contribution seldom is generated.(能举例么

Individual interests, important as it is, can narrow possibilities in academic world and cause psychological or emotional displacement if scholars and researchers turn a deaf ear to the request from larger society. On the one hand, a narrow focus in their individual interests could block them from other research opportunities that may also interest them(下文提的更多的似是利弊而非may also interest them吧). A scholar has to keep up with the changing demands and trend in academic world if he wants to make the best out of his individual interest. Overlooking the requests and needs in the society could undermine the potential in his research by limiting its scope of application(仅有这一项原因么).

结构:T(想成功,找平衡)——>B1(个人兴趣指引研究方向、给予动力)——B2(无兴趣不会成功)——B3(个人兴趣带来的弊端)——>结论
