Issue 13

As the author says, while English and some other languages have become the worldwide common languages, many of the world’s lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer people use them. This leads us to an issue about whether the governments of the languages-used countries should intervene to prevent these languages from being extinct. To this question, I believe that it is valuable to help the rare used languages exist, but merely actions of the governments cannot be very helpful. Actually, many cultural organizations and academics should also be involved in the protecting actions.

To begin with, these lesser-known languages may be very helpful for modern people to understand the cultural and commercial history of specific regions. Ancient people generated languages in order to communicate better and record incidents, thus only from languages can we learn the former living situation of the natives. Through studying and researching these apparently useless languages, historians can comprehend the ancient historic materials and infer the level of productivity, commercial actions, and human relationship of the natives in the particular region. Besides, languages themselves are always regarded as symbols of culture and civilization, as many languages are created by mixing some other languages. So from the research work of linguists, we can get a clear understanding about the cultural communication in this area at that time. So it is indeed necessary to prevent these less used languages from becoming extinct.

But who should take the responsibility to save these languages on the brim of extinction? The government of countries in which they are spoken, of course, should not shirk the responsibility. As language is also a kind of cultural heritage, the governments should pay attention to the survival of their native languages and tried to protect them. And with the advancement of archaeology, maybe one day a new picture of the ancient civilization of the country will appear.

However, mere support from the governments is not enough, the protection is a tough task and need the help of cultural organizations and scholars in different fields. Some of the lesser-known languages are the original languages of some poor and small countries. Maybe it is not feasible for the governments to spend money on the protection of languages while there are numerous people are struggle against hunger and illness. Under these circumstances, international cultural organizations, such as United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization, should provide necessary support, and call scholars’ attention to the problem. And the scholars in the field of history, linguistics and archaeology, with strong academic background, may do great favor to the problem.

In sum, I always believe it is necessary to prevent the lesser-known languages from being extinct. As the support should not only form the governments, but also from cultural organizations and acdemics.

段首的‘but’ ,可以删掉,两段之间并没有转折关系,只是顺接关系。另外,这段缺少具体的事例。
